Abstract

Tycho Hedéns Väg in Uppsala has evolved from being a through fare passage and highway
to the oversized road frame running through the city it is today. At the present time, due
to the relocation of the E4 highway east of Uppsala, Tycho Hedéns road creates a barrier
between the north eastern area of Uppsala and the remaining parts of the city centre. The
road is designed to endure heavy traffic and high speed limits, generating a surrounding urban
area were inhabitants are complied to follow the standards set for a high traffic-accessible
environment. Furthermore, the heavy traffic has led to the turning of both urban roadsides
away from the actual road. The aim of this project and proposal is to show the possibilities of
how the innate features of Tycho Hedéns road can be used more advantageously to mend the
city area of Uppsala. The space created between housing and the crossing parks, accompanied
by its central location is considered to be the area of great potential for Tycho Hedéns road.

The work consists of four major sections. The first section deals with questions concerning
city- and traffic planning and the municipal of Uppsala’s approach to the traffic route. General
questions regarding public transportation and its possibilities are also included in the first
section. In the second section of the report, the area per se is analyzed; first as a part of the
city, then as an individual part and lastly the area is divided into sequences. The design proposal
is presented in the third section of the report, followed by an analysis and conclusion in the
fourth part where questions posed throughout the project process are met and discussed.

Tycho Hedéns Väg genom Uppsala har utvecklats från att vara genomfart och europaväg, till
att idag vara en överdimensionerad väg genom staden sedan E4:an fick en ny dragning öster om
Uppsala. Den är en kraftig barriär som skiljer de nordöstra delarna av Uppsala från centrum
och resten av staden. Vägen är utformad för att hantera mycket trafik och höga hastigheter. Det
är bilarnas krav på framkomlighet som dominerar och staden med omkringboende invånare
har fått rätta sig efter bilarna. Trafikdominansen har gjort att båda sidor av vägen vänder
sig bort från den. Målet med arbetet och förslaget är att visa hur man med de möjligheter
trafikleden besitter, men i dagsläget inte utnyttjar, skulle kunna läka staden. Tycho Hedéns
Vägs potential ligger i det stora utrymmet mellan husliven, de korsande grönområdena samt
dess läge i staden.

Arbetet består av fyra delar. Den första delen behandlar frågor kring stads- och trafikplanering,
Uppsala kommuns förhållningssätt till trafikleden och trafikfrågor samt kollektivtrafikens
möjligheter. I den andra delen analyseras området: först som en del av staden, sedan som
enskild del, för att till sist delas upp i sekvenser. Gestaltningsförslaget presenteras i den tredje
delen. I den fjärde och avslutande delen följer en diskussion där jag ställer och resonerar kring
frågor som uppkommit på vägen.
