Abstract

In Sweden, we have a long history of being in the forest where forest social values for humankind are often categorized as recreation or exercise that provide health values. Increased urbanization and migration challenge the understanding of social values as mere recreation. Today, we know little about the social values of forests, and even less about how increased urbanization and migration affect the use and understanding of urban forests in Sweden. Therefore, it is interesting to study the social values of forests based on user descriptions and studies of what the visitors do in the forest. The empirical material of this bachelor exam is made from interviews and observations from Råbyskogen and its administration in the Municipality of Västerås. This study theorizes the material with help from social science based on how the forest appears to the individual. The result shows that the forest is a social arena for visitors beyond the forest as a place for recreation and exercise, and that the meaning of forest for visitors and visitor's understanding of the forest is varied among different people regardless of their origin. In addition, it is not the same for every visit to the forest, and it is not always the forest itself that constitutes the purpose of the visit. At the same time, everybody does not see a meaning with a visit in the forest. Therefore, in further research, it is important to see the social values of the forest from a broad perspective based on human activities and interactions that occur in and around the forest.
