Abstract

Around the world trends in food production indicate that more and more people feel that they have a responsibility towards the earth and sea, in exchange for the resources we enjoy. Among these new ideals is also a criticism of existing fisheries, which by rationalized methods risk to over exploit the natural stocks of fish in the sea and lakes. Meanwhile, there is also criticism of the cultivation of aquatic organisms, previously highlighted as the solution to the depleted state of the oceans, since they also have a negative impact on the environment. In this stalemate, where the demand for fish continues, while the supply decreases, new forms of fish farming has surfaced. Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) is an example of a closed, land-based farming system for aquatic animals, which by recycling the water has less impact on the environment. This paper examines this new form of production in the Swedish context, and also how these RAS producers motivate their choice of production. The study is qualitative and based on the testimonies of six informants who are active producers of fish in recirculating, land-based systems.
With the guidance of the concepts of motive, ontological security and social movements the material has been analyzed, to illustrate the external and internal factors affecting the choice of the informants. The study has shown that land-based aquaculture requires only limited space and few of the skills traditionally associated with food production in a rural context. Instead, extensive biological and ecological knowledge of fish, as well as technical expertise is essential to successfully operate the complex aquaculture facilities needed. Within the group of informants there are two prominent reasons for the choice of production method, one value driven and the other one entrepreneurially driven.
