Abstract

Pressure from both internal as well as external stakeholders induces limitations concerning environmental and social impact as a natural commitment for modern companies. The forest industry has an important part in this work as a global player and user of natural resources and a producer of renewable products. Consideration to environmental and social issues during silviculture is one of the areas where the work with CSR is conducted. These considerations have been systematically screened by forest companies during many years and presented in for example annual and environmental reports.

One of the weaknesses in these screenings is the lack of evaluations concerning how the results and the purposes are communicated towards different stakeholders and what effect this has on the future silvicultural work of these groups. The aim of this study is to explain conditions and possibilities for development of CSR communication toward different groups of stakeholders.

To achieve the aim, a qualitative case study has been conducted on the largest forest owner association in Sweden regarding the communication of one of their environmental evaluations towards forest owners, entrepreneurs and employees at the company. The results have been received through 36 interviews with questions based on a conceptual framework addressing CSR, stakeholder theory, communication and CSR-communication.

The study shows that the level of knowledge regarding general consideration within the forest industry is high. The knowledge regarding results from the specific evaluation and how this can be used is however low for forest owners and employees and high within the group of entrepreneurs. Lack of time for employees, lack of knowledge for forest owners and lack of substance in the information communicated is seen to be the biggest issues regarding communication of the results from the evaluation. Therefore the communication should be adapted by the stakeholders’ desires and in general be communicated on a more frequent and effective basis, adapted to strategies submitted in this study.

The respondents in this paper have a positive attitude towards the work and the importance of CSR conducted by the studied forest owner associations. There are opportunities for improvements regarding CSR-communication which could be a possibility to further strengthen the picture of the associations as a sustainable partner and contribute to economic, environmental and social benefits for both the company and the stakeholders.
