Abstract

Växtgestaltning är ett av landskapsarkitektens viktigaste verktyg. Det är också en komplex process
eftersom växtmaterialet förändras beroende på faktorer som ståndort, växtzon och årstid. I mitt arbete har
jag undersökt växtgestaltningsprocessen genom att ta fram ett förslag som fokuserar på växtgestaltning
för hela året. Arbetet har skett genom inventering, analys och intervjuer som ledde fram till ett
gestaltningsprogram och en konceptidé. Vid valet av växter använde jag mig av Nick Robinsons metod
”funktion, karaktär, ståndort”. Metoden förenklades för att underlätta tillämpningen. Gestaltningen
pressenteras i en växtplan, och fyra årstidsplaner där årstidsdynamiken beskrivs. Det visade sig att metoden
var användbar och gav ett resultat med ett stort antal växter som bidrar med prydnadsvärden under olika
delar av året. Att grundläggande arbete med inventering och analys är en förutsättning för växtgestaltning,
och att presentationen av förslaget kan tydliggöra gestaltningens brister och bli en del av metoden, är två
av arbetets slutsatser. Gestaltningsförslaget i detta arbete är utarbetat för entrén till Uppsala Botaniska
trädgårds tropiska växthus men liknande tillvägagångssätt kan användas på andra platser med andra förutsättningar.

Planting design is one of the most important tools for landscape architects. It is also a complex process due
to how the planting material changes depending on factors like habitat, climate and season. In my work
I have studied the process of planting design by developing a design proposal that focuses on planting
design for all seasons. The work has been done through inventory, analysis and interviews that resulted
in a program and a concept for the design. When choosing plants I used a simplified version of a method
developed by Nick Robinson. The design is presented in a general plan and four illustrations showing the
dynamics among the plants as the season changes. The method showed to be useful and lead to a result
including a large number of different plants contributing to the design at different times off the year. To do
a thorough inventory and analysis showed to be a fundamental condition for planting design. The study
also found that the making of illustrations for the purpose of presentation can help bring up weaknesses in
the design and there by become a part of the design method. The design in this project is developed for the
entrance of the tropical greenhouse in Uppsala botanical garden, but the approach can be applied to other
places with different conditions.
