Abstract

Luleå är beläget vid kusten i Norrbotten. Det flacka älvlandskapet och centrums läge på en halvö medför att den visuella kontakten med vatten är god. Det geografiska läget medför att infarterna huvudsakligen koncentreras till två vägar: Älvbrovägen och Bodenvägen. De båda infarterna löper genom natur med vitt skilda karaktärer; den första genom mager tallhed och ondulerande sanddynor och liten kontakt med omgivande bebyggelse, den senare genom moränmark med blandskog och björkbestånd, vikar, områden med storhandel och i närheten av bostadsbebyggelse. Det som är gemensamt för de båda infarterna är att det finns ett behov av att
bryta av monotonin i trafikantupplevelsen och förbereda resenärerna på mötet med staden.
Här fann jag möjligheten att gestalta för resan från ett mörkt landskap till den upplysta staden. När mörkret lägger sig över Luleå försvinner en stor del av rumsupplevelsen; endast där det är belyst upplever vi rymd. Att använda sig av ljus i gestaltningen tillför ytterligare en dimension och påverkar till stor del hur uterummet upplevs nattetid och vintertid. Eftersom Luleå är en vinterstad råder andra
förutsättningar under en stor del av året; snötäcket lägger sig över naturens former och dagarna är korta. I mitt examensarbete har jag koncentrerat mig på hur en vinterstad kan belysas och gestaltas för att framhäva dess positiva aspekter, samt för att ge trafikanten förståelse för det landskap de färdas i.
I gestaltningsarbetet har jag främst utgått från platsernas
förutsättningar och försökt lyfta fram de huvudsakliga
karaktärsdragen. Materialen som jag arbetat med har varit få och valts för deras anknytning till det omgivande landskapet eller Luleås identitet som stad. Målet har varit att de platser som gestaltats utmed de två infarterna tillsammans ska bilda en enhet; de enskilda platserna har relativt låg komplexitet med tanke på referenshastigheterna.
Förhoppningen är att de olika platsernas utformning tillsammans ska ge bilistens körupplevelse en bättre rytm, samt att medvetandegöra landskapet och förbereda för mötet med staden. Eftersom mörkret är omslutande kommer en förändrad ljusbild att ändra upplevelsen av landskapet totalt, vilket för med sig ett ansvar vid ljussättningen. Den ljussättning som jag föreslår på varje plats är framtagen med tanke på den omgivande ljusbilden, så att upplevelsen inte blir för omedelbar.
Gestaltningen har utvecklats parallellt med ljussättningen och målet har varit att de tillsammans ska bilda en enhet och stärka varandra.
Arbetet med utformningen av vägrummen inleddes med
litteraturstudier, platsanalys och studieresor. Främst var jag intresserad av hur andra vinterstäder gestaltat utifrån sina förutsättningar, samt hur trafikantupplevelsen kan förbättras utan att ge upphov till distrahering och bländning. Gestaltningsprocessen inleddes därefter med en skissprocess, varefter jag provade idéerna i arbetsmodell och sedan reviderade skisserna till en slutgiltig idéskiss för hur Luleås infarter kan gestaltas och effektbelysas.

Luleå is a coastal city in the north of Sweden. It is situated in a plain landscape, at the mouth of the Luleå river. The downtown area is located on a peninsula, implying that the visual contact with the water is excellent. In addition, the geographic location of the city brings that the main entrances are concentrated to only two approaches. They run through nature with distinct features; one not resembling the other.
The first approach passes through a pine heath with waving sand dunes and no visual contact with surrounding buildings, the later runs through a moraine landscape with deciduous trees and conifers, bays, strip malls and in proximity to housing areas. Common to the both approaches is the need of interrupting the monotony of the travelling
aspect of the driver and to prepare for the encountering city.
This gave me an oppurtunity to mold the journey from the dark surrounding landscape to the illuminated city. When the darkness is falling, the spatiality of Luleå disappears; only where there is light we experience space. To use illumination in the design can bring further
dimensions to how we experience the outdoor space at night time, as well as at winter. Luleå is a winter city, hence other conditions reign through a big part of the year; when the snow is falling, the landscape attains other shapes and the days get shorter. In this thesis, I have concentrated on how a winter city can be illuminated and designed in
order to enhance its positive features, as well as to give the driver an understanding of the landscape he or she is travelling in.
In the design process, I have mainly worked with place specific solutions and aimed to embrace the special features of the landscapes. The materials I have chosen either have a connection to the landscape or to the image of the city. The aim has been that the design interventions in each place will form an entity as a whole and a meaningful sequence. Each design has a rather low complexity, due to the high reference speed. The hope is that the sequence will offer the driver a more intriguing experience with a better rhythm, and to consiouness-rise the entouring landscape and prepare for the encounter with the city. Since the darkness is heavy, a change of the
balance in illumination will reshape the surroundings completely.
This implies a great responsibility when making changes. The light design for each spot in this proposal has taken the specific level of illumination in consideration. The design proposal has been developed parallel with the light design, in order to create one strong concept,
where they can strengthen each other.
Finally, the working process with designing for the road areas started of with literature studies, site analysis and study tours. Mainly, I was interested in how other winter cities have been designing according to their specific conditions and how the driver’s experience can be
ameliorated without causing flickering or distraction. The design process then proceeded with scetching, whereby I tried out the ideas in a model. Parts of the design where revised and finally put together as the design proposal for how the entrances of Luleå can be designed and illuminated.
