Abstract

To live with a disorder could be associated with many kinds of potential obstacles preventing play. On the other hand, a skilled designer has the opportunity to facilitate play by eliminating these obstacles. In recent years, the availability of playgrounds has been a well debated topic. One of the clearest signs of this is shown in the increasing use of rubber in favor of sand as fall protection surface. But there are few guidelines and recommendations on how the outdoor environment should be designed to be accessible and there is especially little written about how to adapt to children with various disabilities. The few existing guidelines often focus on mobility and also lack concrete solutions adapted for children with disabilities. The design of the playground can create and eliminate various physical and social barriers. Physical obstacles are often easier to notice than social barriers and the physical obstacles may consist of uneven surfaces, handles that are difficult to grip or stairs. The physical barriers can also cause social barriers. For a child that is constantly dependent on adult’s assistance, or is unable to get into every part of the playground, the opportunity to interact with children in the same age is affected. This essay focuses on the needs of children and adults with physical disabilities, and how these can be met so that all children and their accompanying adults can have as much pleasure as possible from the playground. There are several difficulties in creating an accessible playground. What would be a solution to some may create new obstacles for others, and although several people have the same disability there are individual differences. By making flexibility a part of the playground design, to the possibility to meet these differences increases. Playground equipment with multiple applications and degrees of challenges could for example promote that children with varying abilities play together. The aspects that have been considered to have significance on the playground accessibility has been compiled into a checklist that can be used as a basis for self-monitoring during project planning. This essay ends with a design proposal that exemplifies how the criteria in the checklist can be met in a real place.
