Abstract

Efficiency is, for many organizations, a concept associated with maximising the use of resources. This is something that is also applicable for Swedish forestry, which today is very eager to be resource-efficient in their operations. However, there are other meanings of efficiency concepts. Toyota, with its Toyota Production System and use of lean production has proven that an efficient process flow with customer focus can be a successful approach.

This study addresses this ‘lean production’ as a theory in Swedish forestry and links this to the timber-procurement process. This is to answer whether an implementation of lean production could contribute to a more efficient flow of the timber-procurement process, and if so, could increase the customer value for forest owners in the process.

In order to answer the main questions used in the study, semi-structured telephone interviews with four respondents from two different timber buying forestry companies, and 3 telephone interviews with forest owners of various property sizes were conducted.

The result of the study demonstrates that information, short lead times, minimizing vehicle damage, and increased incomes are all factors that forest owners value in the timber-procurement process. All forestry company respondents say that they want to become more flow-efficient, as they believe that this can be used as a competitive advantage. Improving both the internal and the external information flow and by shortening time from the last “transport-movement” to payment, would reduce costs in the process according to the forest companies respondents. This would not only increase customer value but also result in a more even flow, according to respondents. ‘Lean production’ is a general business strategy meant to minimize waste and, therefore the theory applies to all types of businesses to achieve flow-efficiency. Even on the timber-procurement process.
