Abstract

Today, Swedish dairy cows are fed concentrates often containing one part of soybean meal imported from Brazil. Soybean meal is the fraction of soy beans after oil extraction. It is rich in crude protein and further treatment increases rumen stable protein fraction and the amino acids absorbed in the small intestine. However, the soy production in Brazil is questionable because it contributes to rainforest devastation, biodiversity loss and has negative impact on the local population by pollution from pesticides. In Sweden one alternative to soy could be domestic protein feeds, e. g. rapeseeds, peas, faba beans or by-products from the production of beer or ethanol like brewers’ and distillers’ grain. The Swedish protein feeds have lower crude protein content than soybean meal. Nevertheless, combining several of the Swedish protein feeds have potential to replace soy and these feeds can also be locally produced. Also Swedish protein feeds can be subjected to treatment in order to increase rumen stable protein. Today, domestic produced protein feeds are used in Swedish dairy cows’ rations but the cultivation is limited because the small demand and sometimes poor profitability. If the benefits of Swedish protein feeds were more well-known and if the demand and productivity were to increase the cultivation could also raise. Therefore, the import of soy to Swedish dairy cows’ feed could decrease. A fully Swedish ration to dairy cows could also improve the status of the product and therefore lead to more profitability to the farmer.
