Abstract

The physiological reactions associated with stress are important for animal’s ability to cope with critical situations. However, chronic stress could lead to several negative effects on animal’s production, welfare and health. There are high requirements on today’s dairy cows. They should have good health and fertility and produce large amounts of milk with good quality. If the cows are exposed for long-term stress, it is hard to meet these requirements. Stress leads to activation of the sympatic nervous system and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal cortex system, which implies increased heart rate and cardiac output, redistribution of blood to the skeletal muscles and higher levels of glucose and free fatty acids in the blood. Long-term stress can lead to heart diseases, decreased immune defence and decreased fertility. Implications of long-term stress in dairy cows are also decreased milk yield and decreased milk quality.
Dairy cows meet stress in all types of housing systems, but the situations that lead to stress differ between different types of dairy barns. In free-stall housing systems competition between cows in feed bunks and lying area and waiting in small areas before milking are critical situations that may lead to stress. Cows in automatic milking systems shows higher levels of stress because the cows has less synchronic behaviour, than cows that have been milked manually. In housing systems with tied cows the main reason to stress is the small ability for movement. To avoid stress in dairy cows, it is important to design the dairy barns and routines to maximise the freedom for the cows to decide over their time themselves and to facilitate natural behaviour.
