Abstract

Behavior could be a useful indicator of nutritional imbalances in ruminants if the animals have a motivation to correct these imbalances by feeding behavior. Ruminants possess a degree of nutritional wisdom, which mean that they have the ability to select different kinds of plants containing varying concentrations of nutrients and toxins, to meet their nutritional needs and avoid poisoning. Animals are able to sense the consequences of food intake through feedback mechanisms which modify their foraging preferences. These feedback mechanisms enable the animal to experience satisfaction (satiety) or discomfort (malaise). Malaise is caused by excesses of nutrients or toxins and by nutrient deficiency, and leads to a decreased preference for the ingested food. In intensive production systems the animal feed consists of monotonous rations. Rations are optimized to meet animal average needs which may result in excesses or imbalances of nutrients on individual level. Animals whose nutritional requirements are not fulfilled will direct their foraging activity towards other stimuli, for example licking or chewing on objects or on-each other. Tongue rolling is a typical food-related stereotypy in ruminants. If ruminants spend little time on rumination it can be an indicator that the rations are too low on fiber. Sodium deficiency can be suspected if the animals are licking on salt-contaminated surfaces. Several researches have suggested that intensive ruminant production systems should allow ruminants to be more active players in the feeding process. Having the choice between a variety of foods allows the ruminants to manifest their food preferences. This literature review shows ample evidence of which nutritional imbalances can be linked to the feeding behavior. However, it may be difficult to derive excess or deficit of a specific nutrient to the animal´s behavior.
