Abstract

Att gestalta med ljud inom landskapsarkitektur kan ses som relativt ovanligt. Ljudets inverkan på människor och hur detta påverkar utemiljöers karaktär har det dock experimenterats med sedan antikens Grekland. Man använde sig av olika ljudinstallationer som producerade ljud med hjälp av naturens krafter – luft och vatten. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka vilka ljudinstallationer som har använts i historien samt visa exempel på hur de kan användas i modern tid. Ge-nom en litteraturstudie presenteras grundkonstruktion och användning av fyra olika ljudanordningar; kaskad, vattenorgel, eolsharpa samt vindspel. De placera-des i historiska park- och trädgårdsanläggningar för att skapa effektfulla och överraskande ljudmiljöer. Installationerna kaskad och vattenorgel är konstruerade så att de avger ljud med hjälp av transport av vatten. De andra två anordningarna, eolsharpa och vindspel, har en utformning som gör det möjligt att använda luft för att skapa olika ljud och toner. I uppsatsen beskrivs två moderna tolkningar av varje ljudinstallation, vilka var och en, på ett eller annat sätt, har byggts med inspiration från den historiska grundkonstruktionen. Anordningarna från modern tid ger en förståelse för hur de historiska ljudinstallationerna kan användas i da-gens landskapsarkitektur för att skapa spännande och upplevelserika ljudmiljöer på offentliga platser. Arbetet visar att platsens förutsättningar är avgörande för om det lämpar sig bäst med en vatten- eller ljudinstallation. Utformningen är också av stor betydelse och kan variera stort för att ge olika karaktärer, exempel-vis vad gäller skala, material och form. Beroende på utformningen kan anord-ningen antingen vara mobil eller stationär. Ljudinstallationerna ger även möjlighet till mänsklig interaktion och har på så vis en stor potential att skapa mötesplatser. Genom att jobba med ljudgestaltning kan dagens offentliga miljöer berikas för flera sinnen och ge platser en extra dimension.

Designing with sounds in landscape architecture can be seen as relatively un-common. How the sound affects people and the effects to the character of the outdoor environment have been experimented with since ancient Greece. They used various sound installations that produced sounds by using the forces of na-ture – air and water. The purpose of this essay is to examine the sound installa-tions that have been used in history and show examples of how they can be used in modern times. Through a literature review the basic design and the use of four different audio devices are presented; cascade, water organ, aeolian harp and wind chimes. They were in the beginning placed in historic parks and gardens to create impressive and surprising sound environments. The installations cascade and water organ are designed to emit sounds using water transportation, while the aeolian harp and wind chimes are designed to make it possible to use air to create different sounds and tones. The essay describes two modern interpretations of each sound installation. Each of these, in one way or another, has been inspired by the historical basic design. The devices of modern times provide an under-standing of how the historical sound installations can be used in today's land-scape architecture to create exciting and eventful sound environments in public places. The study shows that site conditions will determine whether it is most advantageous with a water or an air installation. The design is also very im-portant and can vary widely to give different characters, for example, in terms of scale, materials and form. Depending on the design, the device can be either mo-bile or stationary. Sound installations can also enable human interaction and thus a great potential to create forums. By working with sound design, today's public spaces can be enriched for several senses and provide an extra dimension to places.
