Abstract

Syftet med litteraturstudien är att beskriva hästens stereotypier samt diskutera vad dessa beror på och hur de kan förebyggas. Stereotypier är upprepade och oförändrade rörelser utan mål och syfte. Om hästar uppvisar stereotypier kan det vara tecken på att de saknar kontroll över sin situation. Det är enbart djur i fångenskap som uppvisar stereotypier. Hästar uppvisar flera olika stereotypier såsom krubbitning, vävning, boxvandring, huvudkast och stereotypt sparkande i vägg. Även träätning beskrivs som liknande en stereotypi, men är troligen ett födosök. Stereotypier utvecklas då hästen inte får möjlighet att utföra sitt naturliga beteende, exempelvis om hästen hindras att utföra sitt ätbeteende, som den är starkt motiverad att utföra. Faktorer som är kopplade till stereotypier är hur lång tid hästen är i stallet, utfodring med lite grovfoder/mycket kraftfoder, typ av strömaterial, brist på social kontakt, ras, olika typer av avvänjning och kön. Hästar som dagligen vistas utomhus löper mindre risk att drabbas av stereotypier. Krubbitning är en oral stereotypi där hästen griper tag i ett fast föremål, och samtidigt drar in luft för att sedan blåsa ut den och avger då ett karakteristiskt ljud. Det finns även ett liknande beteende, som kallas luftsnappare, där hästen enbart drar in luft. Vävning är en motorisk stereotypi som kännetecknas av en sidledes gungande rörelse av huvud och hals, samtidigt som hästen flyttar tyngden från det ena frambenet till det andra. Boxvandring är en stereotypi där hästen går runt i boxen om och om igen. För att motverka stereotypier bör orsaken till dem åtgärdas istället för att hindra dem med fysiska barriärer. Eftersom stereotypier inte förekommer i det vilda bör hästarna hållas på ett för hästen så naturligt sätt som möjligt, där hästens beteendebehov tillfredsställs.

The purpose of this study is to describe the horse's stereotypies, and discuss what these are and how they can be prevented. Stereotypies are repetitive and constant movement without goal or purpose. If horses lack control over a situation they may develop stereotypies. Only animals in captivity exhibit stereotypies. Horses exhibit stereotypies such as crib-biting, weaving, stall-walking, head-shaking and stall-kicking. Even wood-chewing is described as a stereotype, but is most likely a search for food. Stereotypies develop when the horse is not allowed to perform their natural behavior, for example if the horse is prevented from performing their eating behaviour, which it is strongly motivated to perform. Factors linked to stereotypies is; time in the stable, feeding with low forage/ much concentrate feeding, type of bedding material, social contact, breed, different types of weaning and sex. Horses that daily are let outdoors are less likely to suffer from stereotypies. Crib-biting is an oral stereotype where the horses grasps a fixed object, and simultaneously draws in air and then blow it out and then emits a characteristic sound. There is also a similar behaviour called wind-sucking where the horse only inhale air. Weaving is a locomotor stereotypy marked by a lateral rocking movement of the head and neck, while the horse moving the weight from one front leg to the other. Stall-walking is a stereotype where the horse walks around the box over and over again. To prevent stereotypies the underlying causes should be considered instead of trying to prevent it with physical barriers. Given that stereotypies do not exist in wild horses they should be kept in a way that satisfy the horse´s natural needs, where the horse's behavioral needs are fulfilled.
