Abstract

Rektaliseringsmodellen Breed’n Betsy är tänkt att användas som ett komplement till undervisningen med levande djur i anatomi- och reproduktionskurserna på veterinärprogrammet vid Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (SLU). Modellen består av en metallram där bäcken och konstgjorda honliga reproduktionsorgan från nöt eller häst kan monteras för att efterlikna olika sexualcyklus- och dräktighetsstadier. Syftet med examensarbetet är att utvärdera rektaliseringsmodellen och undersöka hur den kan användas på bästa sätt i undervisningen. Material till utvärderingen samlades in i 3 omgångar; vid den ordinarie rektaliseringsundervisningen (grupp A som inte använt simulatorn och grupp B, som använt den), vid ett försök med frivilliga studenter (grupp C, som övat med simulatorn och grupp D, som inte övat med simulatorn) och vid ett försök med erfarna lärare vid SLU/UDS (Universitetsdjursjukhuset). Resultaten från grupp A och B analyserades med hjälp av chi-2-test och visade ingen signifikant skillnad mellan grupperna avseende förmåga att hitta livmoder och äggstockar vid rektalpalpation, däremot fanns det en tendens till att de som kände sig mer förberedda hittade livmodern i större utsträckning. Resultaten från försöket med grupp C och grupp D redovisas deskriptivt och visade att grupp C i högre grad angav att de kände sig förberedda att rektalisera levande djur och att de hittade samtliga organstrukturer vid rektalpalpation i högre utsträckning än grupp D. Resultaten från försöket med erfarna lärare vid SLU/UDS redovisas också deskriptivt och visade en relativt stor variation i deltagarnas storleksbedömning av olika strukturer. Flera deltagare i försöken uttryckte att vissa delar av rektaliseringsmodellen inte kändes verklighetstrogna, men överlag var omdömena positiva. Detta i kombination med resultaten från grupp A-D tyder på att modellen kan vara ett användbart och kompletterande hjälpmedel i undervisningen, om övningarna på simulatorn sker på särskilt avsatt schemalagd tid.

The rectal palpation simulation model Breed'n Betsy is meant to be used as a supplement to training in live animals in the anatomy and reproduction courses in the veterinary curriculum at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The model consists of a metal frame where a pelvis and replicas of bovine or equine female reproductive organs can be suspended to mimic different stages of pregnancy or other conditions related to the reproductive tract. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the palpation model and examine how it should be used in teaching. Data for the evaluation was collected during the regular rectal palpation training (group A that had not used the simulator and group B that had tried it), in a trial with students who volunteered to participate (group C which had practiced with the simulator and group D which had not practiced with the simulator) and in a trial with experienced teachers at SLU and the university animal hospital (UDS). The results from group A and B (analysed by chi-squared test) did not show any significant difference between the groups in the ability to find the uterus and ovaries by rectal palpation, but there was a tendency that those who felt more prepared for training rectal palpation in live animals also found the uterus to a greater extent. The results from the trial with group C and group D showed that all the students in group C stated that they felt prepared, compared to the students in group D whose results were more scattered. Group C also found all the structures during rectal palpation to a greater extent than those in group D. The results of the trial with the experienced teachers at SLU/UDS showed a relatively large variation among the participants in the evaluation of size of the various structures. Several participants in the trials expressed that some parts of the model did not appear lifelike at palpation, but the opinions on using the simulation model as such were generally positive. This combined with the results from group A-D suggests that the model can be a useful tool in the teaching process of rectal palpation, if it is used on scheduled time.
