Abstract

Former system for feed evaluation was limited as it only took the fiber content of the feed into account and ignored the physical characteristics of the feed. Several studies have proven that the physical characteristics of feeds are important for maintaining milk fat production and
avoiding production diseases like acidosis. This study contains a literature review and a trial where chewing behavior was measured when six cows were fed two silages with different physical characteristics. The literary review showed that a number of measures of physical
structure have been created in former studies. The goal has been to apply these measures in feed evaluation systems to avoid production and health problems. However, many studies
indicated that it was often difficult to correlate the measures of physical structure to the PHvalue of the rumen. Other studies presented results that suggested that the maturity of the plant at harvest also have a large influence on chewing activity.

In the trial performed in the present paper the chewing behavior was measured using IGER Animal Behavior Recorder (Rutter et al, 1997) and was analyzed using the adjoining software.

The different feeds were analyzed for both length and width and the milk production of the cows was measured during the whole feeding period. A 2x2 change over model was used with
a cut silage with a particle size of 15, 3 cm as one treatment and with a precision chopped and macerated silage with a particle size of 1, 7 cm as the other treatment.

A significant difference was seen in the indexes for chewing and eating as well as the index for number of boli per day. There was on the other hand no difference in the index for rumination or feed intake. The chemical composition of the two silages was different regarding the pH-value. The precision chopped silage was more acid than the cut silage which might explain the lack of difference in feed intake. There was also no difference in milk
production or in the milk fat- and protein content between the two treatments. The lack of differences in rumination behavior was surprising due to the large difference in structure between the feeds. Both feeds were harvested early and it can be assumed that the longer eating time of the feed with larger particles was enough for the particles to be broken down in the rumen.

The conclusion was that longer particles of early cut grass affect the eating behavior but not necessarily the rumination behavior. This trail has not been able to measure the long term effect of a feed ration with short particles.
