Abstract

Pig farms in Sweden add zinc as a feed additive to satisfy the physiological need of zinc. Also high dose of zinc oxide (2000 mg Zn/kg fodder) can be used during the weaning of the piglets to prevent diarrhea. The use of zinc additives increase the zinc concentration in the manure and when the manure is spread on the fields zinc is added to the soil. A high zinc concentration in the soil can affect microorganisms, soil fauna and plants negatively which degrade the function of arable land as a producer of crops. Microorganisms are considered to be particularly sensitive. The aim of this study was to investigate the zinc flow to arable land in Swedish piglet production to see how the soil´s zinc concentration is affected in a long-term perspective. Special attention was given the use of zinc in high dose.
In order to determine how the zinc accumulation is affected by piglet production barn balances and field balances were made for integrated, specialized and satellite herds. From the balances, calculation was made for how long time it takes to reach 100 mg Zn/kg soil from the average zinc concentration for Västra Götaland (50 mg Zn/kg soil) in arable land. All the data to the balances was gathered through a literature study. Soil sampling was done at fields where manure from piglets producers had been spread during many years and at nearby fields where manure had not been spread. This was done to see if the zinc concentration in reality had increased due to the spread of pig manure.
Calculations show that the zinc concentration increase was fastest for the herds that use high dose of zinc, doubling takes 68-135 years. Of these, the satellite herd has the fastest accumulation rate and the integrated herd has the slowest accumulation rate. When zinc in high dose was not used the corresponding time for doubling was 198-262 years, with the fastest accumulation rate for the integrated herd and slowest for the specialized herd. From the soil sampling the unadjusted values showed a significantly higher zinc concentration in the topsoil from the fields where pig manure has been applied for many years. But when the zinc concentration in the topsoil was adjusted to take the natural variation in consideration using subsoil concentrations, there were no significant differences. If the zinc concentration in reality had increased as a result of pig manure application it should also have been significant differences for the adjusted values. Therefore the interpretation of the results from the soil sampling is uncertain.
The calculations of zinc accumulation were made against the limit above which application of sewage sludge according to Swedish legislation is not allowed (100 mg Zn/kg soil). The real zinc concentration when problems to microorganisms, soil fauna and plants occur doesn’t need to be the same. Studies have shown large variations in zinc concentrations which have caused toxic effects on microorganisms and soil fauna. According to the calculations here, the use of zinc oxide in high dose increases the concentration of zinc in the pig manure and gives a considerably faster zinc accumulation in arable land. The use of zinc oxide in high doses is probably not an acute problem for the majority of the Swedish arable land. However, in a long-term perspective the use of zinc in high dose will probably make the zinc concentration in soil too high. This mean that the use of zinc oxide in high dose during the weaning of piglets should be phased out in the future. The calculated rate of accumulation was not confirmed by actual measurements of zinc concentration in arable land that belongs to piglet producers. But the soil sampling still show a tendency of higher zinc concentration due to the use of pig manure.
