Abstract
,This bachelor thesis deals with rural and urban children's perceptions of agriculture. It is of a qualitative approach and empirical data have been collected using group interviews with 37 children in grades 1-2 in Skåne in Sweden, at a rural school and at a city school. In this essay, I analyze the children's stories about farming and agriculture products. My findings show that urban children have learned what they can about agriculture in school, through classroom teaching but also through visits. Children in urban schools had very similar stories about agriculture, while children in rural schools were significantly more diverse experiences and knowledge. The children who were brought up on the farm that went to school in rural areas had practical experience of agriculture, while those who were not related to agriculture in rural areas had little knowledge of agriculture because in rural schools were there either classroom instruction about agriculture or made any visits to the farm. I will also discuss the role of agriculture and knowledge of agriculture may have in the school, when a better knowledge of farming can help to create aware and knowledgeable individuals and consumers of food in society. My results show that the school's treatment of agriculture plays a crucial role in children's knowledge. Especially own practical experience of agriculture shows you to be important. Given that the number of active farms in Sweden is small and continue to dwindle, the school's roles in giving children this experience are all the more important.
