Abstract

The aim of this literature review is to identify flowering plants that may function as nectar resources in Swedish apple orchards and thereby promote the presence of natural enemies of tortricids. Tortricids cause big problems in apple orchards around the world. There are a lot of different tortricids but in this review Adoxophyes orana, Archips podana, Archips rosana, Cydia pomonella, Hedya nubiferana, Pandemis heparana and Spilonota ocellana has been of interest. Several parasitic wasps are natural enemies of tortricids and they can be attracted to orchards with the help of nectar resources. One of the goals with habitat manipulation is to benefit and propagate natural enemies so that they will be present at the same time as the pest to thereby minimize the damage to the crops. There is very little information on which parasitoids that could be present in Swedish apple orchards. The parasitoids chosen for this review, and that exists in Sweden according to the database Dyntaxa, is: Bassus rufipes, Ascogaster quadridentata, Ascogaster rufidens, Meteorus ictericus, Macrocentrus linearis, Macrocentrus pallipes and Macrocentrus thoracicus from the Braconidae family. Campoplex difformis, Pristomerus vulnerator, Itoplectis maculator, Pimpla turionellae and Phytodietus polyzonias belong to the Ichneumonidae family and Colpoclypeus florus from the Eulophidae family. There is also a lack of information on which flowering plants that can enhance natural enemies in apple orchards. Research from countries such as New Zeeland has, among others, suggested the annual plants Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.) and Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) as sources of nectar. These plants could also be useful in Swedish climate as well as other plants with exposed nectaries. Several plants in the family of Apiaceae could therefore be appropriate. Further examples of potential plants are given and include annuals as well as perennials. There is a need for further research in the field.
