Abstract
,As public transport becomes increasingly electrified, the role of biogas as a vehicle fuel in Uppsala’s urban bus traffic is expected to decline. At the same time, Uppsala has an established biogas production system, where organic waste and sewage sludge are converted into biogas and biofertilizer. Biogas is still expected to remain part of Uppsala’s circular energy and resource system in the future, but new areas of application need to be identified. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate alternative uses of biogas within the public sector in Region Uppsala, with a focus on the utilization of existing infrastructure, economic performance, environmental impact, energy efficiency, and robustness.
The results present two main alternative applications. The first scenario involves using biogas for local electricity and district heating production at Uppsala’s city bus depot. This could be achieved through a biogas-powered engine or a combined heat and power plant, where the electricity contributes to charging electric buses and the waste heat is recovered. The results show that the future electric bus fleet may require approximately 35–44 GWh of electricity per year. Since biogas infrastructure is already connected to the bus depot, including storage and a pipeline from Kungsängen, there is potential to make extensive use of existing systems.
The simulation shows that a CHP biogas engine with an installed capacity of 5 MW produced 37 GWh of electricity and required 91 GWh of energy in raw gas, which corresponds well with the estimated future gas production of 90 GWh. Despite the production of 37 GWh of electricity, 19 GWh still had to be imported from the electricity grid, while 12 GWh was exported. In addition to the exported electricity, 44 GWh of heat was recovered and exported to the district heating network. The total investment cost for the accumulator tank and engine is estimated at SEK 52.6–71.9 million. The economic analysis indicates an annual loss of SEK 58 million. The total climate impact shows a reduction in emissions of 1,570 tonnes CO-eq per year.
The second alternative is to use biogas as a fuel for backup power generation. This was examined for larger critical public services, such as Uppsala University Hospital. The results show that biogas-powered backup generation can help reduce climate impact compared with current fossil alternatives, while also strengthening local energy preparedness by using a regionally produced fuel. However, there are challenges related to storage, transport, costs, and the fact that existing backup power infrastructure is already adapted to other fuels.
For Uppsala University Hospital, the backup power system was dimensioned as seven generator units with a capacity of 2 MW each. Assuming test operation for two hours per month, the annual emissions per generator were calculated as 15,552 kg COe for MK1 diesel, -120.96 kg COe for biogas, and 9,360 kg COe for EcoPar A. The estimated investment cost was SEK 140–182 million, plus approximately SEK 10 million for gas storage or a gas pipeline connection. For the mobile backup power unit, the fuel demand was calculated as 8–9 m³ of CBG at 200 bar for an output of 170 kW over 48 hours. The estimated investment cost for the generator units was SEK 2–2.6 million, plus approximately SEK 500,000 for gas storage using CBG gas container modules.
