Abstract

I följande uppsats undersöks vilka faktorer som påverkar ungas sannolikhet att delta i kommunal politik i svenska landsbygder. Demokrati är en viktig grundpelare i Sverige, och för att denna ska fortskrida krävs en bred representativet bland våra politiker. I dagsläget är andelen unga i den kommunala politiken underrepresenterade, och faktorerna bakom detta problem är vad studien syftar till att belysa.
Uppsatsmaterialet har samlats in genom att intervjua unga politiker med nära koppling till landsbygden. Materialet analyseras med hjälp av ”Civic Voluntarism”-modellen för att identifiera de strukturer som influerar det politiska deltagandet. Under studien framkommer aspekterna plats, socialt nätverk och politisk kunskap som återkommande faktorer vars effekter påverkar deltagandet, men där även psykologiska faktorer såsom motivation och samtalsklimat inverkar på politiskt deltagande. Vidare undersöks hur landsbygdens förutsättningar inverkar på de resurser som påverkar politiskt deltagande, utifrån dess förutsättningar med långa pendlingsavstånd, utbildningsnivå och socialt kapital.

This thesis investigates the factors affecting young people's participation in municipal politics in rural Sweden. Democracy is a fundamental pillar of Swedish society, and its sustainability relies on broad representation among elected political officials. Youths are currently underrepresented in municipal politics, and this study aims to identify the factors contributing to this imbalance.
The empirical material for this thesis was collected through interviews with young politicians who have close ties to rural areas. The data are analyzed using the Civic Voluntarism Model to identify the structures that influence political participation. The findings highlight place, social networks, and levels of political knowledge as recurring factors shaping participation, while psychological factors such as motivation and the climate of political discussion also emerge as influential. Furthermore, the study examines how the specific conditions of rural areas affect the resources associated with political participation, particularly in relation to long commuting distances, education and the availability of social capital.
