Abstract

I takt med att städer växer blir ytor för grönstrukturer färre, däribland utrymmet för äldre träd. De äldre träden har på senare tid minskat i antal och detta är en pågående trend nedåt. De äldre träden i urbana miljöer bidrar med viktiga ekosystemtjänster både för djur och människor. Dessa ekosystemtjänster kan inte tillhandahållas av yngre träd i samma utsträckning. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka vad som kan göras för att bevara och skapa förutsättningar för att äldre träd ska kunna utvecklas i städer på lång sikt. Studien har genomförts utifrån en kombinerad metod bestående av litteraturstudie och personlig kontakt med yrkesverksamma inom området. Resultatet visar att det finns flera orsaker till att de äldre träden minskar i städer samt att det med rätt verktyg finns möjligheter att öka bevarandet av träden. Som exempel beskrivs hur Uppsala kommun och Stockholms stad arbetar med bevarandet av äldre träd i staden.

As cities expand, space for green infrastructure becomes increasingly limited, including the space for older trees. In recent years the number of older trees has declined and this downward trend is continuing. Older trees in urban environments provide important ecosystem services for both wildlife and humans. These ecosystem services cannot be provided by younger trees to the same extent. The purpose of the study is to investigate what can be done to preserve older trees and create conditions that allow them to develop in cities in the long term. The study has been conducted using a combined method consisting of a literature study and personal contact with professionals working in the field. The results show that there are several reasons why older trees are decreasing in cities and that, with the right tools, there are opportunities to increase the preservation of these trees.
