Abstract

Denna studie undersöker hur rumslig utformning i offentliga stadsmiljöer kan bidra till estetisk hållbarhet. Inom stadsplanering och landskapsarkitektur diskuteras hållbarhet ofta utifrån tre redan etablerade dimensioner: ekologisk-, social- och ekonomisk hållbarhet. Estetiska kvaliteter räknas sällan in som en central del av hållbar stadsutveckling utan snarare något dekorativt, trots att rumsliga och visuella kvaliteter påverkar hur människor upplever, använder och värdesätter offentliga platser över tid. Studien använder tre offentliga rum i området kring Slussen i centrala Stockholm, Vattentorget, Munkbrohamnen och Mälarterrassen som exempel för att undersöka hur rumsliga egenskaper påverkar den estetiska upplevelsen av en plats, och vilka rumsliga egenskaper som tilltalar människan. Syftet med studien är att analysera hur den estetiska upplevelse påverkas av rummets egenskaper, och diskutera hur dessa egenskaper kan bidra till utvecklingen av estetiskt hållbara urbana miljöer. Metoden kombinerar en litteraturstudie som delvis resulterar i ett protokoll, som sedan används för att identifiera och analysera de utvalda platsernas egenskaper såsom omslutning, proportioner och skala. Analysen utgår från olika teoretiska perspektiv och dessa används för att kunna vidare analysera de rumsliga egenskaperna utifrån den mänskliga skalan och prospect-refuge. Resultaten visar att de tre analyserade rummen innehåller rumsliga kvaliteter som kan bidra till estetiska upplevelser, men i olika grad. Skillnaderna i de rumsliga egenskaperna skapar olika förutsättningar, som i sin tur påverkar hur platserna upplevs och används. Studien visar att rumslig utformning spelar en viktig roll för hur offentliga rum upplevs, och pekar på vikten av att integrera estetiska och rumsliga kvaliteter tydligare i planering och gestaltning av framtidens stadsmiljöer.

This study examines how spatial design in public urban environments can contribute to aesthetic sustainability. In the context of urban planning and landscape architecture, there is often three established dimension in relation to sustainability: ecological-, social-, and economic sustainability. Aesthetics is rarely considered in the mix and are instead often treated as something superficial or decorative. At the same time, spatial and visual qualities influence how people experience, use and value public spaces over time. The study uses three public spaces in Slussen, which is a central area in Stockholm, Slusstorget, Munkbrohamnen and Södermalmstorg, as examples to explore how the spatial properties influences the aesthetic experience of a place, and which spatial qualities tend to appeal to people. The aim of the study is to analyze how the aesthetic experience of a place is affected by its spatial properties, and to discuss how these properties may contribute to the development of aesthetically sustainable urban environments. The method combines a literature review, wich partly results in an analytical protocol, that is then used to identify and analyse the spatial properties of the selected sites. The analysis is based on different theoretical perspectives, which are used to further examine the spatial qualities in relation to the human scale and the prospect-refuge theory. The results show that the all of the analysed spaces contain spacial qualities, that in varying degrees may contribute to aesthetic experiences. The differences in spatial properties create different conditions for humans, wich in turn influences how the spaces are experienced and used. The study shows that spatial design do play an important role in how spaces are perceived, and therefore the study highlights the importance of integrating aesthetics and spacial qualities more often in the discussions of sustainability, and in the planning and design of future urban environments.
