Abstract

Inom landskapsarkitektur finns det rådande normer och ideal som påverkar vad det “rätta” sättet att gestalta på anses vara. Dessa normer och ideal påverkar även landskapsarkitektstudenter och det går att antyda en homogenisering bland studenters arbeten. Det kan vara en konsekvens av de influenser studenterna utsätts för och möjligtvis att de kan känna en social press att designa på ett vis som följer rådande ideal. Gestaltningarna tenderar att följa rådande trender och normer, där fokus ligger på funktionella värden över estetiska värden. Detta arbete undersöker vad som påverkar landskapsarkitektstudenters estetiska stil inom gestaltning under utbildningen på SLU - Ultuna, där den estetiska stilen avser både till studentens stil i illustrationer och stil i gestaltningsförslag. Arbetet identifierar de influenser som formar studenternas estetiska stil inom gestaltning i relation till normer inom landskapsarkitektur och utbildningens struktur.

För att undersöka vad som påverkar studenternas estetiska stil inom gestaltningen hölls tre intervjuer med tre masterstudenter. Genom intervjuer med studenterna framkommer det att en rad externa och interna faktorer påverkar deras gestaltningsstil och illustrationsstil. Både utbildningens innehåll och sociala sammanhang influerar studenternas estetiska stil inom gestaltning på olika sätt.

Studenterna upplever att det finns en homogenisering av gestaltningar inom landskapsarkitektur, där normer och trender styr utformningen av gestaltningar. Många studenter strävar efter att anpassa sina arbeten till en föreställd standard, vilket kan skapa hinder för att utveckla en egen estetisk stil. Det finns en oskriven "rätt" väg som ofta efterföljs, vilket gör det svårt att uttrycka mer personliga eller experimentella idéer. De influenser som identifierats är sex olika anledningar som kan ha påverkat den estetiska stilen: en ökad kunskap om illustrationens roll, portfolion och påverkan från omgivningen, digitala verktyg, inspiration och influenser, lärarmas påverkan och balansen mellan funktion och estetik.

Landskapsarkitektur är ett område där funktion och estetik måste samexistera, men där dagens utbildning ofta sätter större fokus på tekniska lösningar än på att främja estetisk utveckling. En ökad medvetenhet om estetiska processer skulle kunna hjälpa studenterna att hitta sin egen stil, snarare än att enbart anpassa sig till rådande normer. Det är viktigt att utbildningen utvecklas för att ge utrymme för personlig och konstnärlig utveckling utan att förlora den funktionella och hållbara aspekten av landskapsarkitekturen.

In landscape architecture, prevailing norms and ideals influence what is considered the “correct” way of designing. These norms and ideals are also influencing landscape architecture students and a prevalence for homogenous designs and illustrations can be detected when looking at their works. That can be a consequence of limited sources of inspiration or perhaps a social pressure to design in aligning ways to the current ideals. These designs tend to follow prevailing trends and norms, where focus lies in the functional values rather than aesthetic values. This essay examines the reason behind landscape architecture students' design choices in design proposals and in the illustrations they create during their studies at SLU- Ultuna. This essay identifies the influences that shape students' design choices in relation to norms within the field and the structure of the educational program.

To examine what influences students' design choices, three interviews were held with masters students. Through interviews with the students both external and internal influences were revealed. Both the contents of the educational program and social context influences the students' design choices in various ways.

The field is perceived by the students to be a homogenization of designs in both the field and the education, where norms and trends dictate how a design should be. Students tend to try to adjust their own work to fit the norm of what they think is expected of them, which could be a hindrance to their development of a personal design style. There is an unwritten “correct” path to design that is often followed, which makes it difficult to express more personal or experimental ideas. The influences that have been identified in this essay are six different reasons that could have affected the design style. The six influences are: an increased understanding of the role of illustration, portfolios and external influences, digital tools, inspiration and influences, the impact of teachers, and the balance between function and aesthetics.

Landscape architecture as a field is a field where function and aesthetics must coexist, but the current educational program often places greater emphasis on technical solutions rather than fostering aesthetic development. An increased awareness of aesthetic processes would aid the students in finding their own design style rather than conforming into existing trends. It is crucial for the educational program to improve and to develop in a way where personal aesthetic growth is prioritized without compromising the functional and sustainable aspects of landscape architecture.
