Abstract

Idag har en tredjedel av Sveriges befolkning pollenallergi och siffran har ökat markant de senaste årtiondena. Pollenallergi är ett ökat folkhälsoproblem som drabbar människor årligen, framför allt i städer. Att allt fler blir allergiska kan bero på förändringar i livsstil och kostvanor, föroreningar i städerna samt mindre kontakt med naturen. Dessutom ställer urbaniseringen större krav på att hantera dagens utmaningar i städerna såsom ökade temperaturer, luftföroreningar och extrema väderförhållanden. Samtidigt som ovanstående faktorer leder till ökade koncentrationer av pollen och allergena pollen i stadsmiljöer, planteras även allt fler träd i städer för att klara utmaningarna i stadsmiljöer. Uppsatsen undersöker därför om trädpollenallergiker har en positiv inställning till stadsträd trots att träden orsakar pollensymtom. Resultatet visade att, oavsett om personer är trädpollenallergiker eller inte, anser nästintill alla att stadsträd har en så stor betydelse att det överväger deras pollensymtom. Det framgick även att nästintill alla tycker att träd är en viktig faktor för att uppskatta stadsmiljöer. Träd har en stor betydande roll när det kommer till städer, både för klimatet och för människors hälsa. Vi undersöker därför olika faktorer som kan påverka den ökade pollenkoncentrationen i städer. Samt hur landskapsingenjörer kan arbeta med trädval vid stadsplanering och projektering, för att underlätta för trädpollenallergiker.

Today one third of the Swedish population suffers from pollen allergy, and the numbers have significantly increased during the last couple of years. This is a public health issue of increasing severity that affects a lot of people every year, especially in the urban areas. The fact that more people suffer from pollen allergy can be explained by changes in lifestyle and diet habits, as well as increased air pollution. Cities and urban areas are facing increasing pressure to manage modern challenges such as rising temperatures, air pollution and extreme weather conditions. At the same time, the way cities deal with these challenges leads to an increase in pollen concentration and pollen allergenicity in cities, as more trees are planted to handle the challenges in urban areas. The essay is therefore examining if people that suffer from tree pollen allergy have a positive attitude towards urban trees, even though they experience symptoms of pollen allergy. The study results indicated that regardless of whether people are allergic to tree pollen or not, the majority believe that the benefits of urban trees outweigh their pollen-related symptoms. The study results also indicated that almost everyone think that urban trees are a big factor for their appreciation of urban areas. Urban trees play an important role in cities, for the climate and for people’s health. Therefore, we examined different factors that lead to rising pollen concentration in urban areas, as well as how landscape engineers should approach tree selection in urban planning, to better accommodate pollen allergy sufferers.
