Abstract

Denna kandidatuppsats är en fallstudie där vi analyserar hur estetiska, sociala och ekologiska värderingar har påverkat utformningen av Uppsala Centralstations järnvägspark. När allt fler reser med kollektivtrafiken sätts större press på stationsområden som ligger centralt i stora städer. I anslutning till stationerna anlades välskötta och påkostade parker. Parkerna har med tiden blivit mindre då samhället utvecklats och fler samhällsfunktioner ska på plats på samma yta. Resultatet av vår fallstudie efter en analys av bilder, planer och kartor visar att de tre kategorier av värderingar vi med hjälp av Ian Thompsons teorier har urskilt i samhället har vägt olika tungt genom tiden. Det är dels beroende på vilka samhällsideal som varit framträdande, dels hur många olika funktioner som ska samspela. Vi för en diskussion om huruvida centralstationen har haft och har kvar Genius loci, platsens själ, eller om den istället har något kallat Genius saeculi, tidens själ. Vi landar i att vi inte kan delge platsen något av dessa begrepp.

This candidate thesis is a case study where we analyze how aesthetic, social and environmental values have affected the design of Uppsala Central stations railway garden. The more people that travel by public transport, the higher the pressure is on the station areas locally centered in the bigger cities. The stations buildings were paired with a well maintained and lavish park. With time, these parks have become smaller due to infrastructure development that forces more community functions together in the same area. The results of our case study after an analysis of images, plans and maps show that the three categories of values we have distinguished with the help of Ian Thompson’s theories have weighed differently over time. It partly depends on which social ideals have been prominent, and partly on how many different functions are to interact. We discuss whether or not the central station previously and currently has Genius loci, the spirit of the place, or if it instead has something called Genius saeculi, spirit of the times. We come to the conclusion that we can assign neither of these concepts to the central station.
