Abstract

Uppsatsen syftar till att kartlägga och granska hur turistindustrin genom STF reproducerar och vidmakthåller maktstrukturer genom diskurser om svenska fjällandskap. Uppsatsens mål är att nå en djupare förståelse för hur konflikten mellan turistnäringen och samiska intressen har formats i kontexten av de svenska fjällen. Detta görs genom tillämpning av kritisk diskursanalys som teoretisk utgångspunkt och metodologiskt ramverk. Uppsatsens empiriska material utgörs av STF:s medlemstidning Turist samt STF:s historiska årsskrifter från åren 1907–1909. Eftersom diskurser är förankrade i den historiska och sociala kontext genom vilken de formats, kommer uppsatsen även kartlägga sambandet mellan historiska och nutida diskurser. I uppsatsens analytiska avsnitt identifieras fyra diskurser. Dessa reproducerar koloniala maktstrukturer där västerländska perspektiv överordnads samiska, samt reproducerar maktstrukturer som reflekterar en antropocentrisk natursyn vilket legitimerar kommodifiering av fjällandskapet. Dessa diskurser samverkar även för att konstruera ett fjällandskap som osynliggör samiska inslag i den dominerande diskursen om fjällen, vilket bidrar till att försvaga samiska markanspråk och, i förlängningen, samernas ställning i den pågående markanvändningskonflikten med turistnäringen. Genom att uppmärksamma hur samiska värden osynliggörs i diskurser om fjällen belyser uppsatsen behovet av att inkludera turistnäringen i diskursiva studier om landskap i relation till svensk ursprungsbefolkning. Detta blir särskilt viktigt i en tid där rådande trender indikerar en intensifiering av konflikterna i den svenska fjällen.

The paper aims to examine how the tourism industry through STF reproduces and maintains power structures through discourses of Swedish mountain landscapes. The aim of the thesis is to reach a deeper understanding of how the conflict between the tourism industry and indigenous interests has been shaped in the context of Swedish mountain landscape. This is done by applying critical discourse analysis as a theoretical starting point and methodological framework. The empirical material of the thesis consists of STF’s member magazine Turist and STF’s historical journals from 1907-1909. Since discourses are rooted in the historical and social context through which they are formed, the paper will also map the relationship between historical and contemporary discourses. In the analytical section of the thesis, four discourses are identified. These reproduce colonial power structures where Western perspectives are positioned as superior to indigenous Sami perspectives as well as reproduce power structures that reflect an anthropocentric view of nature, which legitimizes the commodification of the mountain landscape. These discourses also work together to construct a mountain landscape that renders indigenous Sami elements invisible in the dominant discourse, which contributes to weakening indigenous land claims and, by extension, the position of the Sami in the ongoing land use conflict with the tourism industry. By drawing attention to how indigenous Sami values are rendered invisible in discourses of Swedish mountain landscapes, the paper highlights the need to also include the tourism industry in discursive studies of landscapes in relation to indigenous Sami peoples. This becomes particularly important at a time when current trends indicate an intensification of conflicts in the Swedish mountains.
