Abstract

I en förtätad stad finns det ett stort behov av offentliga attraktiva rum. De vindutsatta platserna är underutnyttjade och avfärdas genom att man enbart ser den problematiska sidan av vinden: dess avkylande effekt. Resultatet blir att de vindutsatta platserna inte utnyttjas och deras möjlighet att bistå staden med en större variation av offentliga rum ignoreras. I detta arbete frågar vi oss om vi har råd att avfärda de vindutsatta platserna och enbart se dem som problematiska med tanke på vindens avkylande effekt. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka om vinden har kvaliteter som vi som landskapsarkitekter förbisett när vi avfärdat vinden som ett problem och om dessa kvaliteter kan användas för att skapa upplevelsevärden på vindutsatta platser.

Genom en experimentell arbetsprocess har vi mätt och studerat vinden i Munkbrohamnen - en vindutsatt plats i Stockholm - och därigenom försökt lära känna och förstå den. Utifrån en egen mätmetod mätte vi vindstyrka och vindriktning på platsen under en månads tid för att kunna dra slutsatser om de vindförhållanden som vi hade som mål att använda för att skapa upplevelsevärden. Parallellt utförde vi intuitiva och spontana vindexperiment som gav oss idéer och kunskap om hur vi kan tolka vinden samt förmedla upplevelsevärden med hjälp av den. I arbetet användes den vindutsatta platsen som ett labb där vindförhållandena kunde studeras och idéer prövas. Vinden fick på så vis bli platsens viktigaste förutsättning även om platsens befintliga kvaliteter och fysiska förutsättningar påverkade och inspirerade idéutvecklingen och arbetets resultat.

Munkbrohamnen delades in i tre platser, alla med olika vindförhållanden. För var och en av platserna formulerades mål för de upplevelser vi ville att besökare skulle få på platsen. Målen för upplevelserna på platserna tillsammans med identifierade vindförhållanden och insikter från vindexperimenten ledde fram till idéutvecklingen där ett landskapsarkitektoniskt tillägg utvecklades för vart och ett av platserna.

Arbetets resultat visar på tre platsspecifika tillägg som utvecklats för att generera en variation av upplevelsevärden för besökare i Munkbrohamnen och som i sin utformning adderat fler kvaliteter till platsen som har gjort den mer attraktiv. Arbetets resultat och tillägg presenteras i en serie där vinden får huvudrollen och människors upplevelser av vinden genom de tre tilläggen skildras.

In a densified city, there is a great need for attractive public spaces. Wind-exposed sites are underutilized and dismissed by only seeing the problematic side of the wind: its cooling effect. The result is that the wind-exposed sites are not utilized and their opportunity to assist the city with a greater variety of public spaces is ignored. In this thesis, we ask ourselves whether we can afford to dismiss wind-exposed sites and only see them as problematic due to the wind's cooling effect. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate whether the wind has qualities that we as landscape architects overlooked when we dismissed the wind as a problem and whether these qualities can be used to create experiential values in places exposed to the wind.

Through an experimental process, we have measured and studied the wind in Munkbrohamnen - a wind-exposed site in Stockholm – in order to get to know and understand it. Based on our own measurement method, we measured wind strength and wind direction at the site for a month in order to be able to draw conclusions about the wind conditions that we aimed to use to create experiential values. In parallel, we carried out intuitive and spontaneous wind experiments that gave us ideas and knowledge about how we could interpret the wind and convey experiential values with the help of it. In the work, the wind-exposed location was used as a lab where wind conditions could be studied and ideas tested. The wind was the site's most important quality, even though the site's existing qualities and physical conditions influenced and inspired the development of ideas and the results.

Munkbrohamnen was divided into three locations, all with different wind conditions. For each of the locations, goals were formulated for the experiences we wanted visitors to have at the location. The goals for the experiences at the sites together with identified wind conditions and insights from the wind experiments led to the idea development where a landscape architectural design element was developed for each of the sites.

The results of the work show three site-specific design elements developed to generate a variety of experiential values for visitors to Munkbrohamnen. Their design added more qualities to the site and have therefore made it more attractive. The results of the thesis, the three design elements are presented in a cartoon where the wind is the main character and people's experiences of the wind through the three additions are depicted.
