Abstract

Architects are constantly faced with having to make aesthetic decisions. Big decisions – like a project’s overall aesthetic character – or small, yet important decisions regarding individual details, without which the aesthetic entirety of the design would be compromised. Making these decisions is a skill that is developed and honed throughout architecture school and later in professional life. This development happens mainly through a combination of gained experience, references, and development of taste – something that makes aesthetic decision-making a difficult thing to teach.

When the architect has decided on an aesthetic vision – how do they ensure that the intended aesthetic experience is realized and mediated to the users of the architecture? What factors are essential for a successful rendering of the artistic vision? This thesis explores, among other things, how theory can inform the creative process and help architects (and other creatives) make more informed and intentional aesthetic decisions. The theory used is Nick Zangwill’s Aesthetic Creation Theory (ACT), which describes the process of artistic creation and the nature of aesthetic value. One of the aims of the thesis is to explore how ACT can inform the design process so that the desired aesthetic, and its functions, are realized. This is done by applying the theory as a framework for the designing of a neighborhood park.

The project site is a derelict factory plot in the old brick industry area Els Rajolars, located on the southern outskirts of the Valencian coastal town of Oliva (Spain). There are currently developing plans in the making for Els Rajolars and the proposal made in this thesis is meant as a suggestion for an early-stage intervention to activate the area and create engagement towards its future development, among the community. This activation is particularly relevant with regard to the area’s current lack of functional public spaces.

The design part of the thesis is an attempt at identifying, and through landscape design mediating an aesthetic of place-related curiosity. Curiosness is chosen as an aesthetic in merit of its connection to interest and care – two emotional states relevant for creating engagement. The final design proposal for the park is to a large extent based on strategies of creative reuse and features facilities for public dialogue, cultural events, movement, education, and festivities.

Arkitekter ställs ständigt inför estetiska val. Det kan handla om stora beslut – som ett projekts övergripande estetisk karaktär – eller små, men likväl viktiga beslut om enskilda detaljer, utan vilka den estetiska helheten riskerar äventyras. Att med förtrogenhet fatta dessa beslut är en färdighet som utvecklas och finslipas under arkitektens utbildning och genom hela yrkeslivet. Denna utveckling sker främst genom erfarenhet, växande referens-kännedom och genom utvecklandet av personlig smak – något som gör estetiskt beslutsfattande till en svår sak att lära ut.

När arkitekten bestämt sig för en viss estetik för sitt projekt – hur säkerställer hon att den avsedda estetiken realiseras och förmedlas till användarna av arkitekturen? Vilka faktorer avgör huruvida den estetiska visionen förmedlas så som den var tänkt? Den här uppsatsen utforskar bland annat hur teori kan informera den kreativa processen och hjälpa arkitekter (och andra kreativa yrkesgrupper) att fatta mer informerade och medvetna estetiska beslut. Teorin som används är Nick Zangwills Aesthetic Creation Theory (ACT), vilken beskriver den kreativa skapandeprocessen samt estetikens värde och funktion. Ett av syftena med uppsatsen är att utforska hur ACT kan informera designprocessen så att den önskade estetiken och dess funktioner kan förverkligas med större framgång. Detta sker genom en översättning av teorin till ett gestaltningsverktyg vilket i sin tur används vid utformandet av en kvarterspark.

Projektplatsen är en nedlagd fabrikstomt i det gamla tegelindustriområdet Els Rajolars, vilket ligger beläget vid den södra utkanten av den Valencianska kuststaden Oliva (i Spanien). Det pågår för närvarande ett intensivt plan- och utveklingsarbete för Els Rajolars och gestaltningsförslaget som presenteras i den här uppsatsen är menat som ett förslag på en tidigt intervention för att aktivera området och skapa engagemang hos invånarna inför områdets utveckling. Denna föreslagna aktivering blir särskilt relevant givet områdets nuvarande brist på funktionella offentliga platser.

Den gestaltande delen av uppsatsen är ett försök till att identifiera, och genom landskapsarkitektur förmedla en estetik av platsrelaterad nyfikenhet. Nyfikenhet valdes som estetik baserat på dess koppling till intresse och omsorg – två känslotillstånd relevanta för att skapa engagemang hos människor. Det slutgiltiga gestaltningsförslaget för parken bygger till stor del på principer av kreativt återbruk och utformades med fysiska förutsättningar för offentlig dialog, kulturella evenemang, rörelse, utomhuspedagogik och lokala sammankomster och festligheter.
