Abstract

Det här arbetet handlar om autenticitet i relation till bevarandeåtgärder i ett kulturhistoriskt grönområde. Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka hur bevarandeåtgärder kan ha en positiv eller negativ påverkan på autenticiteten, utifrån det ursprungliga budskapet och det ursprungliga materialet, i ett kulturhistoriskt värdefullt grönområde. Studien baseras på Stadshusträdgården i Stockholm och åtgärderna för bevarande som utförs där.

Den första delen av uppsatsen baseras på Stockholms stadsmuseums metod för kulturhistorisk bedömning av parker och grönområden. Metodens delvärden samhällshistoria och parkarkitektur används för att undersöka Stadshusträdgården budskap och autentiska illusion. Sedan redovisas bevarandeåtgärderna som utförs i relation till tre bevarandeprinciper (rekonstruering, renovering, fri förnyelse). Utifrån detta utförs analysen som avgör om dessa åtgärder främjar eller hämmar den autentiska illusionen. Utvärderingens resultat visar att autenticiteten omfattas av både teatrum orbi, det ursprungliga budskapet, samt autenticitet i form av det ursprungliga materialet. Resultatet visar att bevarandeåtgärder behöver ta hänsyn till både det ursprungliga materialet och teatrum orbi för att bevara platsens autentiska illusion. Medan det ursprungliga materialet, oftast kan efterliknas, kan teatrum orbi lätt förloras om olämpliga bevarandeprinciper tillämpas.

This essay examines authenticity in relation to conservation of a green cultural heritage. The aim is to evaluate how measures of conservation can have a negative or positive impact on authenticity, both in a physical and abstract sense, of a historical garden. The analysis is based on a case study of The Stockholm City Hall Garden and the measures of conservation currently being applied there.

The first part of the essay assesses the City Hall Garden’s cultural value based on the method of evaluation of green heritage created by the Stockholm City Museum. The evaluation is based on the representation of social history present in the garden as well as the garden’s architectural value. The results of the evaluation are then used to determine the garden’s teatrum orbi, meaning its message. The second part of the essay assesses the current conservation measures in relation to three principles of conservation (reconstruction, renovation and free reconstruction). Based on the conservation measures, the analysis is made to determine if said measures enhance the authentic illusion or inhibit it. The results show that conservation efforts need to take both parts, teatrum orbi and the original physical material, into account for the authentic illusion to be preserved. While the original material can, in most cases, be imitated, the teatrum orbi can be easily lost if the wrong method of conservation is applied.
