Abstract

Landskap, både urbana och rurala, är i konstant förändring och under påverkan av både naturliga och kulturella krafter. Som ett resultat av detta är arbetet med att gestalta en plats aldrig fristående utan alltid en del av en tidslinje, både bakåt och framåt. Mitt i centrala Karlsborg, i nordöstra Västergötland, ligger det gamla bangårdsområdet som har stått tomt och outnyttjat sedan järnvägen lades ner på 1990-talet. Sedan några år tillbaka förs en diskussion om hur området ska utvecklas för en funktionell markanvändning, samt för att bättre samspela med omgivande bebyggelse.

Arbetet syftar till att belysa hur outnyttjade ytor i urbana miljöer kan utvecklas, samt att undersöka vilka aspekter som är viktiga i arbetet att förstå en plats inför ett gestaltningsarbete. Med en gestaltning syftar arbetet att belysa och ge förslag på hur bangården i Karlsborg kan utvecklas för att återfå den centrala roll som platsen förut hade i samhället på grund av järnvägen. Gestaltningsförslaget fokuserar på att koppla bangården både till dess omgivning och historia, samt stärka platsens funktion som mötesplats och entré till Karlsborg.
För att ta fram ett gestaltningsförslag för bangården används olika metoder under arbetet. Huvudsakligen används metoden “Research by design” som struktur i arbetsprocessen. För en ökad förståelse för ämnet och bangården genomförs litteraturstudier samt inventering och analys av platsen. Utöver detta är även en aktiv skissprocess och studier av olika referensprojekt en essentiell del av processen.

Utifrån konceptet “We build upon ruins” presenteras ett gestaltningsförslag för en ny park på bangården som utgår från platsens historia. Byggda element och historiska spår från den nedlagda järnvägen används som “ruiner” och utgör basen i gestaltningen. Parkens utformning behåller och förstärker det långsträckta rum som skapats utefter järnvägen och innehåller, utöver bevarade historiska element, ett flertal tillägg av både byggda element och vegetation som tillsammans skapar en helhet.

Arbetet visar på hur en plats omgivning och historia kan fungera som bas i ett gestaltningsförslag, och genom detta stärks gestaltningens koppling till platsen och dess besökare. Karlsborgs invånare tappade en viktig resurs i och med nedläggningen av järnvägen, men parken kan förhoppningsvis ge dem något annat. Utifrån järnvägens “ruiner” utvecklas bangården och blir till ett centralt offentligt rum som förbinder olika målpunkter och funktioner, samt stärker identiteten i Karlsborg.

Landscapes, both urban and rural, are in a constant state of change and under the influence of natural and cultural forces. As a result, the work of designing a place is never independent, but always part of a timeline, both history and the future. In Karlsborg in the northeastern part of the county of Västergötland, the old railway yard is located in the center of the village. Since the railway was closed down in the 1990s, the yard has been empty and unused, and for several years there has been discussion about the future development of the area.

The paper aims to illustrate how unused areas in urban landscapes can be developed, and to explore which aspects are important to take into account in the work of understanding a place before designing it. With design, the paper aims to propose how the railway yard in Karlsborg can be developed to regain its central role. The design proposal focuses on connecting the area to both its physical surroundings and its history, while strengthening its function as a meeting place and entrance to Karlsborg.

In order to present a design proposal, different methods are used. The method “Research by design” serves a prime function as the structure of the work. Furthermore, both literature as well as inventory and analysis during site visits provides a deeper understanding of the subject and the chosen site. In addition to this, an active sketching process and studies of different reference projects are an essential part of the process.

Based on the concept “We build upon ruins”, a design proposal for a new park at the railway yard is presented, based on the history of the site. Built elements and historical traces of the railway are used as “ruins” and form the basis of the design. The design of the park retains and enhances the elongated space of the railway yard and, in addition to preserved historical elements, several additions of both built elements and vegetation together forms the park.

The paper shows how a place’s surroundings and history can function as the base of a design, and thereby strengthen the design’s connection to the place and its users. Karlsborg’s residents lost an important resource with the closure of the railway, but the park can hopefully offer something else. Based on the “ruins” of the railway, the railway yard is developed and becomes a central public space that connects different destinations and functions, as well as strengthens the identity of Karlsborg.
