Abstract

Syfte med denna litteraturstudie är att undersöka effekterna av att utfodra grovfoder i hönät till
hästar. Ofta används hönät i syfte att förlänga ättiden och öka sysselsättningen för hästen eller för
att minska foderspill. Argument mot användning av hönät är exempelvis att hästen kan fastna i det
och skada sig, att det kan skapa frustration samt att det kan medföra en onaturlig ätställning för
hästen vilket skulle kunna ge negativa fysiologiska effekter. Det finns stöd i litteraturen för att
utfodring i hönät med mindre maskor kan förlänga ättiden av grovfoder och ju mindre maskor desto
längre ättid. Fler studier behövs dock för att kunna säkerställa hur effektivt hönät förlänger ättiden
för olika typer av grovfoder. Användning av hönät till hästar i box kan också minska durationen av
onormala eller stereotypa beteenden. Höjd och placering av hönät kan påverka hästens rygg- och
halshållning samt svalgvinkel så att de skiljer sig från när hästen äter med mulen i marknivå.
Betydelsen av detta är i dagsläget oklar. Användning av hönät kan även öka arbetstiden för utfodring
men å andra sidan minska foderspillet jämfört med utfodring direkt på marken. Fler studier skulle
behövas för att kunna säkerställa hur hästens fysik och välfärd påverkas av utfodring i hönät under
längre tid.

This literature study aims to investigate the effects of feeding roughage in hay nets to horses. Hay
nets are often used to extend feeding time and increase occupation for the horse or to reduce feed
waste. Arguments against the use of hay nets are, for example, that the horse can get stuck in it and
injure itself, that it can create frustration and that it can lead to an unnatural eating position for the
horse, which could have negative physiological effects. There is support in the literature that feeding
in hay nets with smaller mesh sizes can extend the feeding time of roughage and the smaller the
mesh size, the longer the eating time. However, more studies are needed to be able to ensure how
effectively hay nets extend the eating time of different forage types. The use of haynets for horses
kept in boxes can reduce the duration of abnormal or stereotypic behaviours. The height and
placement of hay nets can affect the horse’s back and neck posture as well as the angle of the throat
so that they differ from when the horse eats with the muzzle at ground level. Using hay can also
increase the work time needed for feeding but on the other hand reduce feed waste compared to
feeding directly on the ground. More studies would be needed to ensure how the horse's physique
and welfare are affected by feeding in hay nets for a longer period
