Abstract

Stressrelaterad ohälsa påverkas av den sociala och fysiska miljö vi exponeras för och utgör ett utbrett problem inom slutna anstalter. Natur och trädgårdsmiljöer har stressreducerande egenskaper, av den anledningen anser vi det angeläget att utreda möjligheten för stressreducerande terapiträdgårdar inom slutna anstalter. Studien baseras på intervjuer kompletterade med litteraturöversikt, bestående av teorier och forskning inom stress, miljöpsykologi, trädgårdsterapi och slutna anstalters miljöpsykologi. I samband med en av intervjuerna besöktes sluten anstalt, det bidrog till ökad kunskap om hur miljön är utformad och används men är en begränsad del av arbetet på grund av risk för identifiering av anstalt och personal. Studien visar att trädgårdsterapi innebär möjligheter inom slutna anstalter, eftersom det finns ett behov av stressreducering hos klienterna och för att miljön är stressorsakande. Vidare är terapiträdgårdar förenligt med miljöns komplexa säkerhetskrav och Kriminalvårdens syfte att rehabilitera klienterna för minskad återfallsrisk, då stressreducering främjar klienternas mottaglighet för rehabilitering En anpassad version av trädgårdsterapi kan därmed vara en del av Kriminalvårdens rehabiliteringsprocess. I de slutna anstalternas inskränkande miljö är ökad kontroll, socialt stöd, fysisk aktivitet och naturliga distraktioner väsentliga för att uppnå stressreducerande egenskaper. I nuläget föreligger dock begränsningar såsom överbeläggningar, vilket förstärker stress i en miljö som redan har en hög stressfaktor.

Stress-related illness is affected by the social and physical environment we are exposed to and is a widespread problem in closed institutions. Nature and garden environments have stress-reducing properties, for that reason we consider it important to investigate the possibility of stress-reducing therapeutic gardens in closed institutions. The study is based on interviews supplemented with a literature review, consisting of theories and research in stress, environmental psychology, garden therapy and the environmental psychology of closed institutions. In connection with one of the interviews, a closed institution was visited, it contributed to increased knowledge of how the environment is designed and used but is a limited part of the work due to the risk of identifying the institution and staff. The study shows that garden therapy means opportunities in closed institutions, because there is a need for stress reduction among clients and because the environment is a cause of stress. Furthermore, therapeutic gardens are compatible with the environment's complex safety requirements and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's purpose of rehabilitating clients for reduced risk of relapse, as stress reduction promotes clients' susceptibility to rehabilitation. In the restrictive environment of the closed institutions, increased control, social support, physical activity and natural distractions are essential to achieve stress-reducing properties. At present, however, there are limitations such as overcrowding, which amplifies stress in an environment that already has a high stress factor.
