Abstract

Rullstolsanvändare exkluderas från offentliga utemiljöer till följd av bristande tillgänglighet och hinder. Syftet med studien var att identifiera dessa fysiska hinder, hur de är ett problem för social hållbarhet, samt diskutera möjliga lösningar för att skapa ett tillgängligare och mer rättvist samhälle. För att genomföra detta anordnades en serie semistrukturerade intervjuer med en rullstolsanvändare, samt två representanter från en förening som arbetar med rullstolsanvändare. De svar som framkom genom intervjuerna omarbetades till teman och analyserades utifrån litteratur kring hälsoeffekter associerade med utevistelse. Dessa var avstånd, dimensioner & lutningar, underlag, oväntade hinder, estetik & tillgänglighet, samt energi. Temat energi förklarar varför hinder är ett problem för social hållbarhet. Möten med hinder kostar rullstolsanvändare fysisk och mental energi, samt bidrar till en ond cirkel där energikostnaden gör att rullstolsanvändare undviker att ge sig ut. I längden leder detta till att deras liv begränsas och de går miste om hälsofördelarna med utevistelse, vilket begränsar deras hälsa och valmöjligheter. Landskapsarkitekter kan ändra detta genom att involvera rullstolsanvändare i gestaltningsprocessen, samt fortsätta öka sin förståelse för deras situation. Detta är nödvändigt för att samhället ska uppnå social hållbarhet.

Wheelchair users are excluded from public outdoor spaces due to insufficient accessibility and obstacles. The purpose of this study was identify physical obstacles, how they are a problem for social sustainability, and discuss accessible solutions to create a more accessible and fair society. To achieve this a series of semi-structured interviews were arranged with one wheelchair user, as well as two representatives from an association who works with wheelchair users. The answers from these interviews were then reconstructed into themes and analysed based on literature regarding the health impact associated with being outdoors. The findings include distance, dimensions & incline, foundation, unexpected obstacles, aesthetics & accessibility, as well as energy. The theme energy came to explain why obstacles were a problem for social sustainability. Encounters with obstacles cost wheelchair users physical and mental energy, as well as contributes to a downward spiral where the energy cost prevents wheelchair users from going outside. This leads to their lives being limited and missing the health benefits that accompany being outdoors, which in turn limits their health and opportunities. Landscape architects can change this by involving wheelchair users in the design process, as well as continue to expand the understanding of their situation. This is imperative if society is to attain social sustainability.
