Abstract

The aim of this study was to quantify the risk of internal loading of phosphorus (P) in the sediments of 21 constructed wetlands, situated in agricultural catchment in close proximity to the lake Mälaren in Sweden. Furthermore, to evaluate how factors in the catchment area and in the wetlands, effect the risk of internal loading. This study found that the calculated maximal internal loading (Li) in the wetlands ranged from 4 up to 21,6 mg/m2/d. This variation is mostly due to the total mass of P and iron bound P found in the wetlands. However, the model does not include organic bound P, and the amount of P that risk leaking from the wetlands could be higher. Share of agricultural land and clay content did not have a profound effect on the risk of internal loading. Factors in the wetlands however had some impact. The constructed wetlands designed for P accumulation had generally a higher concentration of P, which could contribute to internal loading, than wetlands with similar depth. For further studies, including additional catchment-factors would perhaps be an option for better understanding the external impact on internal loading in the wetlands.
