Abstract

As a response to the shortcomings of the global food system, alternative ways to produce and distribute food have emerged. In Sweden, REKO is an alternative food network that has been growing in recent years and its expansion also reflects the increasing interest in local food. In order to understand whether the REKO network can drive structural changes in the food system, it is interesting to know more about the motives, needs, interests and values of the actors. The purpose of this study is to investigate why producers engage in REKO groups, what their view is on REKO groups and what they mean to them. This is investigated through qualitative interviews with six producers that are part of REKO groups in Uppsala County and/or Stockholm County. The material is analysed with the concepts of self-organization and boundaries. The results show that the producers see several benefits with REKO groups as compared to other sales channels. They are motivated by practical and economic aspects and the main values they see in REKO groups are associated to the local feature, small-scale production, and the direct contact with consumers. At the same time, they stress different aspects in these values. The producers have different points of view on what should be regarded to be within the boundaries of the REKO model. They bear witness that new REKO groups with more permissive rules are created when existing groups tighten their rules. The capacity of the self-organizing REKO network to keep its alternative character and drive changes in the food system is therefore uncertain.
