Abstract

As a complement to the rest of the landscape, cities have the conditions to contribute to biodiversity by offering habitats that rural landscapes more frequently struggle to do. However, the ongoing densification that prevails in many cities often takes advantage of green areas, leaving these areas fragmented. With fewer and smaller parks and green areas remaining, this runs the risk of affecting the spread and movement of species. This thesis has investigated how leftover spaces, as part of the green structure of cities, can function as a dispersal corridor for the conservation of biodiversity.

Through a case study in the urban area of Karlstad, an inventory and examination of leftover spaces between several green areas were done. The results of the investigation showed that most of the leftover spaces that were discovered consist of lawn as well as mixed vegetation, and that larger areas are less likely to occur in the inner and densest parts of the city.

In the light of urban ecological theory focusing on green corridors, an analysis of the results of the inventory concluded that leftover spaces in Karlstad have the potential to function as temporary dispersal elements in the city. However, an overall conclusion is hard to draw, as the function as a dispersal element turned out to be complex and strongly influenced by species, the character of the surface, and the relation to other green or hardened surfaces.

This thesis has shown that leftover spaces constitute a large part of the city's actual green structure and that these areas therefore should be a part of the planning for biodiversity and sustainable cities.
