Abstract

Konceptnamnet: "To be or not to be a biotope" sammanfattar målgruppens brytningstid mellan barn och vuxen och deras miljö.

There is uncertainty around the design of adolescent children’s schoolyards. The target group are children at the same time as they approach adulthood. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is Swedish law since 2020, gives young people the right to play and rest during breaks in school. The Education Act states nothing for the schoolyard as it focuses on knowledge requirements. Play and rest is of importance as it is a way for adolescents to reflect and recover even though this is not stated in the Education Act.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how green qualities together with a thought through design for the outdoor activities can increase the use of a schoolyard for adolescent children. The thesis is based on studies that claim evidence of greenery's positive effect on health. It is carried out with an exploratory design of the schoolyard of the school of Björkeby in Järfälla. Tools developed for the design of younger children’s schoolyards inspire the design: play value zones and lekotopes. The concept name: To be or not to be a biotope summarizes the target group's transformation from children to adults and their relation to their environment. Principles for the design of the adolescents' outdoor activities are developed from the concept of ecosystem services, Jan Gehl's definition of good urban planning, Nick Robinson's visual composition for plants, and the author's own experiences as a teacher. The developed schoolyard principles has each an icon and a belonging explanation. From the on-site studies, different nature character zones were developed within the schoolyard. The zones called; nature, yard and park, contain also activities of various kinds. The incidence of the zones were studied and together with the design of the entrance areas, a base for the design was created. The entrances were designed to increase the mobility between the indoor and outdoor environments as a kind of transit hall. They were also designed to give the schoolyard of Björkeby a specific visual character and identity. The last step in the design process uses the schoolyard principles to increase the variety of outdoor activities.

The design method created a diverse schoolyard rich of experiences and can be developed further. Furthermore, the incorporation of a range of different green qualities, such as the improvement of the yards microclimate and the management of the storm water within the schoolyard, improves the conditions for schools outdoor activities. The green qualities developed creates distinctive spaces within the schoolyard landscape. However, the safety aspect has to be addressed if the proposed design would be implemented. A major advantage of the design proposal is that the schoolyard does not remain as a secluded area for just one purpose. Instead, it has park qualities and allows anyone to use it. By making the schoolyard available and more public, the economic, social and ecological sustainability of the municipality will increase.

Finally, proposals for further development are given through The Ombudsman for Children guidance on how to work with The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The guidance is called Barnrättsresan. Besides, two planning tools for schoolyards are proposed.
