Abstract

Detta arbete visar hur en flygplats kan omgestaltas till en stadsdelspark med målet att ge platsen en identitet och där befintliga kvaliteter kombineras med sociala, ekologiska och estetiska värden. Gestaltningen genomförs inom ramen av den internationella idétävlingen Malmi flygplatspark, där avsikten är att komma med nya innovativa sätt att omgestalta den nedlagda flygplatsen till en stadsdelspark.

I takt med förändringar i olika näringar frigörs ny mark i staden och gör platsen disponibel för nya ändamål. När storskaliga platser omvandlas till nya stadsdelar är det viktigt att säkerhetsställa att det finns tillräckligt med plats och variation av grönområden och parker för att förbättra invånarnas hälsa och sociala interaktion samt stärka miljön och ekologiska samband.

Gestaltningsprocessen inbegrep ett antal metoder som legat till grund för detta arbete. Där presenteras Malmi-områdets platsspecifika förutsättningar och historia. Vidare analyserades två referensprojekt Fornebu Nansen Park och Tempelhof Friheit, två forna flygplatser som omgestaltas till stadsdelsparker. Att använda referensprojekt gav en djupare förståelse för platsens kvaliteter och hur dessa kan utvecklas. En vetenskaplig förstudie genomfördes för att stärka designvalen i gestaltningen där teorier om platsidentitet, upplevelseaspekter i stadsrummet och tri-valent design studerades. Skissarbetet genomfördes för hand, i modell och digitalt under hela arbetets gång för att utveckla och landa i det slutgiltiga förslaget.

Gestaltningsförslaget Lyftet – en gemensam plats i den nya staden syftar på allas rätt till det offentliga rummet. I förslaget har en variation av upplevelser och platser skapats för att bjuda in alla människor att använda parken under årets alla säsonger. Gestaltningen syftar till att förstärka platsens identitet genom att lyfta platsens historia och samtidigt tillföra något nytt. Arbetet i stort syftar till att bidra till nya idéer om hur storskaliga platser likt flygplatser kan omgestaltas och ge nytt liv i staden.

The aim of this thesis is to illustrate how an airport can be redesigned into a city district park while strengthening its identity and combining existing qualities with social, ecological and aesthetical values. The design proposal is done within the framework of the international architectural idea competition Malmi Lentoasemanpuisto with the object to generate new innovative ideas how to redesign the old airport into a city district park.

Cities are growing and industries are changing which creates opportunities to use abandoned spaces for developing new city districts. One important part of developing a new district is to ensure that there is enough green space and a variation of spaces to improve social interaction and health for the citizens and strengthen ecological and environmental correlation.

The main part of the thesis was the design process, which included several methods and analysis. Malmi airport current state and history were studied. Furthermore, analysis was made of two reference projects; Fornebu Nansen Park and Templehof Freiheit, both former airfields. The analysis of the reference projects gave a deeper understanding of the qualities of the place and how to amplify them. A scientific research about place identity, experience aspects of urban space and Tri-valent design was carried out in order to understand and motivate the design choices. Sketch works were made by hand, model and digitally during the entire process to develop the final design proposal.

The design proposal Take off – Common Ground in the New City emphasizes everyone’s right to public space. The proposal has a variation of space and experiences to invite everyone to use the park all year around and around the clock. The design aims to strengthen the place identity by including elements inspired by its former use and at the same time add something new. In a broader sense the objective of the thesis is to produce new ideas how to redesign large scale places such as airfields to bring new life into the city.
