Abstract

I denna studie undersöktes

Beteendet pillar i bädd förekom

The digestive system of the horse is designed to ingest small amounts of feed continuously. Our domesticated horses are often fed using strategies that do not allow
them to carry out their natural foraging behaviour. One feeding strategy where horses
can forage for a greater part of the day is ad libitum access to forage. This strategy is
however not often suitable for adult horses that are not in hard exercise since horses’
voluntary intake often exceeds their nutritional needs. This may lead to risk of obesity
for many horses that get ad libitum access to forage.

One feeding strategy that is used to extend the eating time for roughage is haynets.
The haynets are supposed to make it harder for the horse to ingest the feed and thereby slow down the consumption rate. Previous studies have shown that the use of
haynets can extend the eating time compared to feeding on the ground but disadvantages of using haynets are also discussed. One such disadvantage is that the frequency
of frustration behaviours might increase with the use of haynets compared to feeding
on the ground. Another strategy that is used to extend horses’ eating time is to add
straw to the ration. Straw contains less energy and more fibre than most forages,
which might make it a suitable feed to use for extension of the horses’ access to
roughage. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of combinations of haynet
and straw on eating time and feeding behaviour when feeding forage.

The combinations that were examined in the present study were haylage on the
ground, haylage in haynet, haylage and straw in haynet, haylage in haynet and straw
on the ground. Nine horses were observed in a change over study where each horse
underwent all of the treatments. Each treatment lasted for three days in a row, with a
four day wash out period in between. Eating time, total foraging time and foraging
time after the haylage was finished were measured. The feeding behaviours were registered according to an ethogram.

Eating time (p <0.0004) and total foraging time (p ≤0.04) were shorter for the
treatment haylage on the ground than for the other treatments. Weeks had an effect
on eating time which was longest the first week (p ≤0.03) and shortest the fourth
week (p ≤0.006). The foraging time after the haylage was finished tended to be longer
for the treatment haylage on the ground compared to haylage in haynet (p=0.06). The
behaviour “foraging in bedding” was registered in 60% of the observations with the
treatment haylage in haynet and straw on ground and in 92% of the observations
when the haylage was presented on the ground.

The conclusions made from this study were that the use of haynets can slow down
the consumption rate and thereby increase the eating time for forage compared to
feeding on the ground. Straw in combination with haynets could extend the total foraging time of the horse but not extend the eating time of forage. How these feeding
strategies can be used to extend the eating time and thereby potentially contribute to
increasing welfare in horses is something that has to be examined in further studies.
