Abstract

Stadsplanering har historiskt sett utgått ifrån människans skala, rörelsemönster och gånghastighet. Den markanta ökningen av antal bilar per invånare i Sverige under andra hälften av 1900-talet resulterade i att planeringen fick ett annat fokus. Stadskärnor i landet omdanades för att ge plats åt bredare gator för bilarna och fler parkeringsplatser, samtidigt som stora delar av städernas centrala bebyggelse byttes ut till modern arkitektur.

Genom inläsning av stadsbyggnadshistoria och stadsplaneringsteorier samt en platsanalys har ett gestaltningsförslag för kvarteret Åran, Hjo, och dess omgivning tagits fram. Förslaget syftar till en plats för människan vilket ges av en flexibel offentlig mötesplats, omslutande vegetation och minskad biltrafik i området. Gatorna omkring kvarteret blir till ett gångfartsområde och ny markbeläggning minskar skillnaden mellan trottoar och körfält för att reducera biltrafikens plats i det offentliga rummet. Till följd av att Hjo i gestaltningsförslaget öppnas upp mot sjön Vättern erbjuds stadens invånare och besökare en miljö med luft, ljus och vatten - människans tre viktigaste behov.

Urban planning has historically been based on the human scale, movement patterns and walking speed. The significant increase in the number of cars per inhabitant in Sweden during the second half of the 20th century resulted in a changed focus in urban planning. City centers across the country were redeveloped to accommodate wider streets for cars and more parking spaces. At the same time large parts of the cities’ central buildings were replaced with modern architecture.

Through a study of urban planning history and theories as well as a site analysis, a design proposal for the city block Åran, Hjo, and its surroundings is produced. The proposal suggests a place for people, which is provided by a public place with a lot of possibilities, enclosing vegetation and reduced car traffic in the area. The streets around the block become a “walking pace area” were the vehicles drive under the terms of the pedestrians’. New pavement reduces the differences between the sidewalks and roadways to reduce the cars’ space in the public. As a result of the opening of Hjo towards the lake Vättern in the design proposal, the city's residents and visitors receive an environment with light, air and water - the three most important needs of the humankind.
