Abstract

En välutvecklad och pålitlig kollektivtrafik som möjliggör mobilitet är avgörande för livet i staden; men för att stadsrummet ska frodas behöver invånarna känna sig trygga nog att använda det. Redan på 1960-talet diskuterade Jane Jacobs vikten av ”ögon” och naturlig övervakning för att en plats ska upplevas trygg. Syftet med denna uppsats är att sammanställa och ge förslag till hur den upplevda tryggheten kan främjas inom planering, gestaltning och förvaltning av offentliga miljöer. Mer specifikt undersöks tryggheten i det planerade stationsområdet i Järla, Nacka kommun utanför Stockholm. Stockholms tunnelbana byggs med början under 2020 ut till bl.a. Nacka. Med nya torg och entréer till tunnelbanan kommer Järla och dess omgivning förändras drastiskt. Det planerade stationsområdet i Järla analyseras utifrån ett trygghetsperspektiv genom att ställa frågan: ”Hur kan upplevd trygghet tillgodoses i utformningen av Järla stationstorg när tunnelbanan utvecklas mot Nacka?” Undersökningen har gjorts med bakgrund i teorier och metoder inom trygghetsbaserad stadsplanering samt genom dokumentgranskning och semistrukturerade intervjuer med informanter verksamma inom trygghet och landskapsarkitektur. Resultatet visar att trygghet behöver tillgodoses i alla skeden inom landskapsarkitektur. Ytterligare resultat är att inte bara platsen i sig utan dess placering i landskapet avgör tryggheten och säkerheten. En slutsats är att en trygg offentlig plats som främjar mobilitet också är socialt hållbar.

An effective transportation system that is trusted and enables mobility is essential for life in the city; but for the urban space to thrive, residents need to feel safe enough to use it. Already in the 1960s, Jane Jacobs discussed the importance of “eyes on the street” and natural surveillance for a place to feel safe. The aim of this essay is to discuss how perceived safety can be achieved when constructing a public space. More specifically, it analyzes the safety in the station area of the planned station Järla. Järla is located in Nacka, a suburb in the southeast of Sweden’s capital Stockholm. With a new public square and new buildings near the entrance of the subway, Järla and its surroundings will inevitably change as a result of the expansion of Stockholm’s subway system. In this paper, a safety-based perspective will be applied while answering the question: “How can perceived safety be achieved in the design of Järla station square when Stockholm’s subway is expanding towards Nacka?” The discussion is based on literature on safety-based urban design as well as document review and semi-structured interviews with professionals employed in safety and landscape architecture. The results show that safety need to be addressed in all stages of landscape architecture. Furthermore, the results clarify that not only the site itself but also its placement in its surroundings will determine the safety of the space, both when it comes to actual and perceived safety. It can be concluded that a safe public place that enables mobility will also be socially sustainable.
