Abstract
,Mental illness is a well-known matter in today’s society. Among farmers it’s a growing matter and unfortunately there is not much help available for the Swedish farmers. There are many different ways to be affected and all cases look different, given the background to the triggering factor. Sometimes it can be hard for the victim to realize that they may need help. When a person is exposed to mental ill-health, they need to be able to have access to simple and easily accessible tools that are needed for a full and complete recovery. They need to be able to get in touch whit the right people to help them whit that, to make the outcome as good as possible. Unfortunately, we don’t have that in Sweden. We can see a trend that farmers mental health has a negative development at the same time as the physical health develops positively. Some farmers feel a great shame about having mental illness and chose not to talk about it and instead they remined silence and keep everything to them self. When those crises strike, it could have its triggering factor in drought, wrong investments or just family matters. We have an habbit to notice how the companies are doing financially, but its quite rare to notice who the person behind the company name are doing. It rare that the person’s social relations are affected, both at a personal stage but also professionally. Farming is a lifestyle and more than just a job, when something is happening the person is affected at all stages in life.
Its important to remember that those families often are completely dependent on that the bussnies is going well, they become very vulnerable in that way. Many are also educated though practice and have a lack of education in areas that concern crisis management.
In this report I will focus on understanding the mental health of farmers and other people who are in the agricultural industry. As said we know that mental illness is a problem among farmers, but what help and which tools are required to help them both during the critical occasion and during the recovery process. How big will the consequences be if this is not illustrated. Although previous research shows that the problem exist, the link between mental health an recovery are missing. There we have a need for research and therefore the purpose of this report is to investigate what kind of help that is required to help, and through that create a model to follow.
This study is designed as a qualitative interview study in the form of analysis of mental ill health among farmers. The focus is on identifying why the farmer feels bad, what the triggering factor is, the consequences of the triggering factor and how the recovery process looks. The study includes 6 different farmers who are all in some way exposed to mental illness. The interviews are anonymous to protect the farmer and to make them as comfortable as possible during the time of the interviews, to make them give as honest answers as possible to make the study reliable.
The results of the study show that farmers do not find the support needed during the critical situation and do not really realize their problems until they are in the recovery phase. The social acceptance and norms differ slightly from the results. The older farmers find the social acceptance less and the standards larger while the younger ones find the opposite. To cope whit this mental illness at the critical moment most of the farmers did nothing only one did use help from the outside and that help wasn’t connected to the agrarian industry, the other ones realized after that the was in an need of support. But all of the agreed that there is an need of help and that it’s a growing problem in todays society. However, something that can be assured is that the majority of the cause of mental ill-health is due to some form of economic crisis which, in turn, easily leads to failure and mental instability.
