Abstract

En tågstation är på många sätt en alldeles speciell och betydelsefull plats. Den innebär kontakt med omvärlden men är samtidigt en plats att komma hem till. Det är alltså en plats på vägen, inte bara på vägen till andra orter, utan även på väg till andra platser inom orten.

I den lilla landsbygdssorten Örbyhus har tågstationen blivit ett aktuellt ämne. Kommunen planerar att bygga om stationsområdet för att förbättra både funktion och estetik. Utgångspunkten för detta arbete var att sätta omgestaltningen av stationsområdet i ett lite bredare perspektiv. Då en tågstation är en plats på vägen, ställdes frågan hur denna plats på ett bättre sätt kan kopplas samman med två andra vitala målpunkter inom Örbyhus, nämligen skolan och centrum.

I och med att tågstationen och vägarna till och från denna ständigt sätts i relation till andra platser tas begreppen platsidentitet och platstillhörighet även i extra åtanke. Utöver att undersöka hur stråken mellan de tre målpunkterna kan förbättras, syftar därför även arbetet till att lyfta och ge utrymme åt landsbygdsortens karaktär och identitet i samma gestaltningsprocess.

En litteraturstudie och teoretisk grund bygger upp undersökningsmetoder för att dels få kunskap om stråkens förutsättningar och förbättringspotentialer, och dels undersöka vad som är delar av Örbyhus identitet. Platsen undersöks därför utifrån flera olika vinklar, genom att studera platsens historia, utföra en enkätundersökning, samt att inventera och analysera de fysiska förutsättningarna av stråken.

Målet med det resulterande gestaltningsförslaget är att förbättra den upplevelsemässiga och funktionella kopplingen mellan de tre målpunkterna samt lyfta platsens specifika karaktär och identitet.

Projektet visar på den vidd av aspekter som är vara viktiga att ta hänsyn till när det kommer till att gestalta stråk. Inte minst då stråk ses som mer än transportsträckor. Olika element och lösningar används i gestaltningen för att förbättra de sex parametrarna; trafiksäkerhet, tillgänglighet, trygghet, orienterbarhet, bekvämlighet och upplevelse.

Arbetet visar även på, både vikten av, och användbarheten i att ta hänsyn till en plats identitet i gestaltning. Att medvetet undersöka platsidentiteten leder till en djupare förståelse för platsen, samtidigt som denna förståelse också ger ny inspiration till, och nytänkande i, gestaltningsprocessen.

A train station is in many ways a very special and important place. It involves contact with the outside world but is as much about coming home. Therefore it is a place on the way, not only on the way to other towns, but also on the way to other places within the town.

In the small-scale society of Örbyhus, the train station has become a present and important topic. The municipality has plans to rebuild the station area to improve both function and aesthetics. The premiss for this project was to put the train station area in a broader perspective. Because a train station is a place on the way, this projects aims to investigate how this place can better connect with two other vital target points in Örbyhus, the school and the town center.

Since the train station and its connecting paths is constantly put in relation to other places, the project also focuses on the concepts of place identity and place attachment. In addition to investigating how the paths between the three target points can be improved, the project also aims to lift and give space for the character and identity of Örbyhus in the same design process.

A theoretical foundation leads to research methods that aims to gain knowledge about the improvement potentials and conditions of the paths. As well as to investigate Örbyhus’ identity. The site is therefore examined from a number of different angles, by studying the site’s history, conducting a survey, and by analyzing the physical conditions of the paths.

The goal of the resulting design proposal is to improve the sensational and functional connection between the three target points and to highlight the specific character and identity of Örbyhus.

The project shows the wide range of aspects that are important to take into account when it comes to designing paths. Not least when the design aims to look at paths as more just than transportation routs. Various elements and solutions are used in the design to improve the six parameters; road safety, accessibility, sense of security, orientation, comfort and sensation.

The work also shows, both the importance and the usability of taking into account place identity in design. To deliberately investigate the site identity leads to a deeper understanding of the place, while this understanding also gives a lot of new inspiration to the design process. It is a way to re-think the design process and allow the design to take into account the relationship between people and place.
