Abstract

Syftet med det här arbetet var att utifrån litteratur kring trädgårdshistoria, häxor och medicinalväxter, utveckla ett gestaltningsförslag på en tematrädgård i Uppsala Botaniska trädgård. Målet var att trycka på växternas värde i gestaltningar och uppmana både studerande landskapsarkitekter och de redan etablerade inom yrket, att lägga större fokus på växtgestaltningen. Den här gestaltningen är även ett exempel på att lägga in en historisk koppling i ett förslag med ett modernt sammanhang.

Metoden för att skapa ett sådant gestaltningsförslag kan delas in i två delar: den teoretiska och den praktiska. Den teoretiska bestod av en litteraturundersökning där medicinalväxter, allmogens trädgårdar, samt botare och häxans roll i Sverige behandlas. 54 växter som användes inom folkmedicinen valdes ut och utvecklades till fyra detaljerade växtlistor som låg till grund för gestaltningen.

Den praktiska delen bestod av två platsbesök som manifesterades i en inventering och som sedan utvecklades genom digitala kartor från Google maps. Detta för att identifiera platsens fysiska förutsättningar och befintliga värden. Intryck och iakttagelser skrevs ned, renritades och sammanfördes sedan med de slutsatser jag kommit fram till, vilket slutligen resulterade i flera analyskartor. Stor vikt lades även vid att med hjälp av skisser och illustrationer komma fram till och sedan förklara ett program. Utifrån dessa togs ett förslag fram i form av en illustrationsplan, två planer över växternas placering, samt snitt och detaljer.

Arbetet avslutas sedan med ett reflekterande avsnitt där de valda metoderna, processen och resultatet diskuteras. Platsens roll i gestaltningen tas upp samt värdet av valda medicinalväxter i trädgårdsodling. Även valet av gestaltningens funktion och hur den här frågan kan kopplas till dagens samhälle diskuteras.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a design proposal for a small park in The University of Uppsala Botanical Garden. The goal was to underline the value of plants in design proposals and to encourage both students and already established landscape architects, to focus more on the vegetation.

The methods used to answer the research question can be split in to two parts: the academic and the practical. The academic part consisted of a literature study where I research medicinal plants, the gardens of the peasantry as well as the history of healers and witches in Sweden. The proposal is centered around 54 medicinal plants chosen from literature that was combined into four detailed plant lists.

The practical part consisted of two site visits that resulted in an inventory that was later developed through digital maps. The inventory was important to get an understanding of the place’s connection to its surroundings and its function. Four analyses were made from the inventory and observations during the visits, to grasp the place’s current possibilities and challenges. A large amount of this thesis consisted of sketching and drawing, as it was a quick and effective way to make decisive choices, while at the same being one of the easiest and clearest forms of explaining ideas to the reader. The result of the inventory, analyses and sketches were an illustration plan, two plans specifying the placement of all the plants, sections and several details.

The discussion part of this thesis consists of reflections around the methods, choice of place, the design process as well as the result. I investigate the place’s role in developing the proposal as well as the value of the chosen medicinal plants in today’s garden design. I also analyze how and if the subject of this thesis has a role in today’s society.
