Abstract

The Bachelor thesis concerns the visual and physical accessibility of elderly people in public park spaces by analyzing the park Höganäshöjden in Uppsala with guidelines for Age-friendly cities. The thesis begins with a compilation of the elderly conditions from a research viewpoint (both globally and locally) together with background of methods for site description. The result chapter presents a literary study where elderly peoples physical and visual accessibility requirements are compiled into a table with assessment criteria which stems from WHO:s guidelines. Furthermore, the park space Höganäshöjden in Uppsala is studied, first by a general site description, followed by a complementary analysis with the help of the assessment criteria. The results show one way to use WHO:s guidelines as assessment criteria and complement to a general site description. Thus, highlighting the shortcomings and strengths of the park based on the accessibility requirements of the elderly. The discussion, among other things, highlights the need to use more perspectives on accessibility (such as elderly people) in a site description, thus giving a more nuanced view of the park space. The thesis addresses urban planners and landscape architects in Sweden.
