Abstract

Outdoor play has been proven to be important for children's development. But as urban areas often are densified, fewer public places remain where children can stay on their own terms. Higher demands are thereby imposed to school yards and pre-school yards to meet children’s needs. To meet new requirements, the Swedish national board of housing launched general guidelines in 2015. The purpose of the guidelines is to specify the legal requirements for quality in school- and pre-school yards. A guide was also published to provide knowledge and inspiration about how children's outdoor environments can be planned, designed and managed. These actions became a starting point for several Swedish municipalities to adapt the national guidelines to local conditions.

This master thesis in landscape architecture was developed with inspiration from and in cooperation with a project called Hållbara Utemiljöer (English translation: Sustainable Outdoor Environments) in Nacka municipality, just outside Stockholm, Sweden. The project, Hållbara Utemiljöer aimed to improve the quality of children's outdoor spaces in schools and pre-schools in Nacka. One of the goals in within the project was to develop a locally adapted planning tool for school yards and pre-school yards. This question was further investigated within the thesis by developing a tool prototype that we call Lekbar, Lärbar, Hållbar, shortened LLH (English translation: Playable, Learnable, Sustainable).

In the essay, the development of the tool prototype LLH is presented in five steps. In each step, conclusions are drawn that lead further in the process.

Step 1: Evaluation and testing of existing tools became the basis for the formulation of a program that controlled the further development of LLH.

Step 2: A literature review was preformed, to find out what research has proven to be important functions and qualities at pre-school yards. This led to 13 concepts that formed the basis for LLH.

Step 3: Thoughts and ideas were tested and put together into a tool prototype, resulting in a matrix and a guide explaining underlying research and positions.

Step 4: The tool prototype, LLH was evaluated through a workshop.

Step 5: The outcome of the workshop was discussed on the basis of the program that was formulated in step 1. There was also a follow-up meeting with the project managers for Hållbara Utemiljöer where possible further development of LLH was discussed.

The discussion chapter puts forward a discussion of lessons learned from the process of developing the tool prototype. Strengths and weaknesses in the choice of method and implementation of the process are discussed on the basis of the five steps. We also discuss our responsibility as creators of LLH and our desire to be part of the process of further development the tool prototype.
