Abstract

Free fecal liquid in horses is a condition where the feces appear in two-phases at defecation; a solid phase with formed fecal balls, and a liquid phase with free liquid. Many horse owners believe that free fecal liquid is caused by feeding wrapped forage, but in reality factors causing free fecal liquid are almost completely unexplored. The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis of horses with free fecal liquid. The study was based on a survey among Swedish and Norwegian owners of horses with free fecal liquid. The survey included questions such as age, sex, size, body conformation, exercise, housing, feeding, gastrointestinal diseases etc. Incomplete or incorrectly answered surveys were excluded from the study, which resulted in 545 analyzed surveys.

The result of the survey showed that the majority of the participating horses were middle-aged and warmblood horses, used for light work. More than 60 percent of the horses were geldings or stallions (58,5 percent geldings and three percent stallions), and only 38,5 percent were mares. Most horses were fed with haylage as forage, in combination with concentrate and/or supplement. Loose feces were seen in all horses that were fed wrapped forage, whereas most of the horses (60 percent) fed hay had normal feces. About the same number (60 percent) of respondents stated that their horse showed firmer feces when changing from wrapped forage to hay. Other factors that may be related to free fecal liquid are also discusses in the study, such as the importance of forage analysis, possible bacterial contamination of drinking water, gender predisposition, impact of type of paddock etc.

In addition to the survey, a clinical examination of five horses exhibiting free fecal fluid was performed. In this clinical study it was noted that three of the horses had somewhat increased bowel sounds and several of the horses had signs of free fecal liquid in their tail, hind legs and around the anal opening. Otherwise, cardiac and respiratory rate, body temperature and hydration were within normal reference values. The horses were considered clinically healthy, but the increased bowel sounds raised suspicion of increased intestinal motility.

From the result of both the large survey and the smaller clinical study, free fecal liquid appears to occur in horses of all ages and types, in horses used for different purposes, with different feeding and different management. The small amount previous research of the topic together with the design of the study, in particular the lack of a control group, makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions from the results of this study. The topic is scarcely researched, and more specific studies are needed to determine the causes and possible treatments for free fecal liquid.
