Abstract

Today digital guides are most frequently used by the museum and tourism industries. They are also used for education purposes. They make it possible to distribute information and have it easily accessible. In addition to written information they add sound, pictures and videos which lift the whole impression of the visited place to a higher level.

A variety of systems currently in use today have been evaluated. Among these, five cases have been selected and studied thoroughly as they seem to suit the needs of Campus Alnarp better than the others.

These systems are:

• PDA. The guide contains maps, pictures, sound and video and is rented by the visitor.

• Private cell phones to call a server and listen to a spoken text.

• Downloading information to a MP3-player. Only for sound.

• PDA combined with a GPS navigation system, where the equipment is rented.

• 3G-guides for cellphones containing maps, sound, pictures and text, which are rented out. And guides with only pictures and text, which the visitors download to their cellphones.

To choose guidesystem is a strategic decision. No single system is perfect. They all have advantages and disadvantages. The recommendation is to go for a system with PDA as it is the most versatile and offers every kind of presentation in any combination. A system with MP3-download can also be recommended. It offers many possibilities for digital guides used in education.

Digitala guider används idag främst inom musei- och turismbranschen, men även för utbildningsändamål.
De används för att göra information mer lättillgänglig och spännande och kan ge guidning nya
dimensioner genom att skapa helhetsupplevelser med ljud, bild och video.
Syftet med detta arbete är att beskriva olika system för digital överföring av information samt att visa på
möjliga tekniska lösningar för digitala guidningssystem på campus Alnarp.
Fem praktikfall som är applicerbara med tanke på campus Alnarps olika funktioner, har valts ut och
undersöks djupare. Dessa är:
• System med handdator där utrustningen hyrs ut och guiden är i form av karta, bildspel, ljud och
video.
• System där användaren med sin egen mobiltelefon ringer upp en telefonsvarsserver och får lyssna
till en guidning.
• System där användaren via en hemsida laddar ner guidningen till sin egen MP3-spelare. Guiden
består av ljudfiler i MP3-format.
• System med handdator som har kompletterats med GPS-navigering. Utrustningen hyrs ut.
• System med mobiltelefonguidning; ett med 3G-telefon med guidning i form av ljud, bild, text och
GPS-navigering och där utrustningen hyrs ut. Ett annat där användaren laddar ner guiden som är i
form av text och bilder till sin egen mobiltelefon genom WAP-funktion.
Att välja guidesystem är ett strategiskt beslut. Inget av ovanstående system är perfekt, då alla systemen
har för- och nackdelar. Dock kan system med handdator och med MP3-nedladdning rekommenderas.
Med en handdator kan man skapa spännande multimediapresentationer. System med MP3-nedladdning
erbjuder många möjligheter att bygga upp guidesystem för utbildningsändamål.
