Abstract

In Sweden and in the rest of the world we face the problem how to create a sustainable development. At the same time the Swedish million program, a housing program made in the 1960:s and 1970:s, is facing a renewal due to lack of maintenance during many years.
An attempt to join these two interests has been made in the residential area of Gårdsten north of Gothenburg. This paper is a case study to review the project and its approach to the sustainability concept. The purpose is to spread knowledge about the problems that can arise. By studying documentation about the reconstruction I have analyzed the approach that has been used.
The housing company's starting point was user participation and an intention to make the changes visible. Thanks to the changes the area developed into a more ecological and modern habitation. The project has received a lot of positive attention around the world but was also criticized for not regarding the preservation requirement.
There are different ways of looking at how the million program housing areas should be restored. Some consider the preservation of the habitation as the most important thing whereas others advocate a changed value by making changes visible and develop low-waste technology and new ecological solutions. I'd like to advertise for a variety of solutions instead of choosing one and only way as the right way, since sustainability isn't possible without variety. I also advertise for more research on ecological dwelling since there is yet a lot to improve on.

problemet att skapa ett mer hållbart samhälle.
Samtidigt står många miljonprogramsområden
inför förnyelse i på grund av bristande underhåll
under lång tid.
Kan dessa två intressen förenas? Ett försök att
göra det har gjorts vid förnyelsen av miljonprogramsområdet
Gårdsten utanför Göteborg.
Denna uppsats är en fallstudie av projektet och
utreder hur ombyggnaden gått till och hur man
förhållit sig till hållbarhetsbegreppet, syftet är
att sprida förståelse för den problematik som
kan uppstå. Genom att studera dokumentation
om ombyggnaden har jag analyserat vilket tillvägagångssätt
som har använts.
Med utgångspunkt i en aktiv boendemedverkan
och intentionen att synliggöra förändring
har området förnyats både i en mer ekologisk
och i en mer modern riktning. Projektet har fått
mycket positiv uppmärksamhet men också fått
kritik från kulturmiljövårdens sida för att inte ta
hänsyn till bevarande- och varsamhetskravet.
Det finns olika synsätt på hur förnyelsen av
miljonprogramsområden ska gå till. Vissa förespråkar
bevarande av bebyggelsen medan andra
vill förändra symbolvärdet genom att göra
synliga tillägg och utveckla nya ekologiska och
resurssparande lösningar. Jag efterlyser ett mer
nyanserat synsätt till varsamhet, det bör skapas
valmöjlighet genom en mångfald av lösningar
då hållbarhet enligt min åsikt inte kan uppnås
utan mångfald. Jag efterlyser också mer forskning
på ekologiskt boende då detta fortfarande
kan utvecklas mycket mer.
