Abstract

To thoroughly think with safety and security in mind is an important issue in planning of public city spaces. Spaces intended to be available to all inhabitants of a city should have a welcoming appearance. Unfortu-nately, this is not the situation in many pedestrian walkways, parks and such spaces, possibly due to lack in safety and security.
This master thesis intend to examine questions at this issue – what makes you feel safe and what causes insecurity in public city spaces. The safety aspect treats the human psychological and sociological ways of perceiving her milieu and other humans in it, and how the physical shape of her surroundings can affect the sense of safety. The security aspect treats criminology and examines how the physical shape and contents of a public space can cause suitable moments for committing a crime, thus an increasing risk of being attacked.
Conclusions from these theoretical studies are applied in three public spaces in Hässleholm. The spaces have a character of lack in safety and security and are for these reasons good examples of places where people feel unsafe or insecure.
The spaces are of various types and purposes. The first one is a central located park – a meeting place. The second one is an underground pedestrian tunnel – a passageway. The third one is a peripheral bi-cycle/walkway – also a passageway.
By planning and shaping the public city spaces with these aspects I mind, you should be able to give the city inhabitants increased availability and will to visit and use the mentioned spaces. In that way you can create a pleasant and attractive city.

Att tänka igenom trygghet och säkerhet är viktigt att komma ihåg vid planering av offentliga stadsrum. Platser som är till för alla stadens invånare bör utformas så att folk faktiskt vågar och vill besöka dem. Tyvärr ser man ofta gator, parker och andra offentliga utrymmen som är folktomma på grund av bristande trygghet och säkerhet. Det här examensarbetet undersöker frågeställningar kring vad som gör att man känner sig trygg och vad som orsakar osäkerhet på offentliga platser. Trygghetsaspekten handlar om människan psykologiska och sociologiska sätt att uppfatta sin närmiljö och andra människor i den, samt vad i miljöns fysiska utformning som skapar känsla av trygghet. Säkerhetsaspekten utgår från kriminologin och undersöker vad i det offentliga rummets utformning och innehåll som skapar tillfällen till brott och därmed risk för angrepp. De slutsatser som dras tillämpas på tre offentliga platser i centrala Hässleholm. Platserna har kända problem i utformningen och utgör goda exempel på hur trygg-het och säkerhet behövs för att man ska vilja göra ett besök. Platserna är av olika typ och med olika syften. För att tillämpa teorin på olika typer har en mötesplats och två passager tagits som exempelplatser. Det rör sig om en central kvarterspark, en central gångtunnel samt en mer perifer gång/cykelväg. Genom att planera och formge de offentliga stads-rummen med dessa aspekter i åtanke bör man kunna bidra till att stadens invånare bättre kan och vill besöka och använda sin närmiljö. Därigenom kan man skapa en trivsam och attraktiv stad.
